Overview

This part-time course is designed for those who wish to pursue their career and interests in leadership and management. Focused and pragmatic, the PgCert, PgDip and MA all offer a variety of support and are targeted at managers at all stages of their career.

The course aims to develop both the intellectual frameworks and practical skills managers need to operate in dynamic and complex work environments. In doing so, it aims to build an understanding of the nature of organizations and the external context within which leaders and managers operate.

The full programme is completed over two years. However experienced managers or those with previous qualifications may also be eligible to complete the course over a shorter period. Please contact us directly to discuss the eligibility of prior qualification or experience.

This course features a module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)* entitled Global Professional Development – Coaching and Mentoring. Students who successfully complete the CMI module and meet the CMI evidence requirements will also gain a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership and Management and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. This will enable you to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route, once all CMI entry criteria have been met (please visit the CMI website for full details on the criteria to qualify as a Chartered Manager and applicable fees).

*Coventry University’s accreditation with CMI is currently ongoing for the relevant modules, but is frequently reviewed and monitored by the CMI through their quality systems. Course information

This part-time course has been designed for those who wish to pursue their career and research interests in leadership and management. The course is designed with the professional student in mind and many of the assessments focus on strategic workplace issues. Students may also choose to graduate after year one (PgCert) or year two (PgDip) however the MA forms the apex of our suite of leadership and management programmes.

Modules studied cover topics such as the theory behind leadership and management, how to lead and manage strategically, and the personal skills required to become an effective and dynamic leader.

Overview

During Year One, you will have the opportunity to complete the PgCert qualification, and commence your studies towards the PgDip. In the first three semesters of study you will develop your understanding of seminal and contemporary research theories and explore how to understand and develop your own leadership style. You will also have the opportunity to increase your appreciation of leadership and management’s impact upon organisations.

Overview

In Year Two, you will have the opportunity to complete your studies towards the PgDip. This will include understanding the key issues of culture, communication and change. You will then have the chance to complete the final stages of the MA programme, firstly by developing your appreciation of how leaders build capacity in others through coaching and mentoring. Your studies will then be completed through the production of a thesis, which summarises your original research, and should showcase the application of your learning from the course.

During the MA section of the programme, you will also study a module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)* entitled Global Professional Development – Coaching and Mentoring.   • Change, culture and communication – the course should help you to explore how leaders and managers can harness change in an organisation, and how they can shape culture to lead to better results.
  • Strategic leadership – through studying the course, you should have the opportunity to focus on leadership at a strategic level, understanding the key organisational issues leaders face and the impact they can have
  • Research methods – the course should help guide you towards a critical understanding of research methodology, primary data collection and a familiarity with a range of credible research sources.
  • Coaching and mentoring – through the CMI accredited Global Professional Development module, gain a grounding in the best practice around coaching and mentoring

Learning is designed to fit around the demands of working life, with teaching occurring over five Fridays per semester, with additional support online.

The programme is run on an accelerated basis and completed over two years. Furthermore, experienced managers and those with previous experience may be able to join at a later stage. Please contact us directly to discuss the eligibility of prior learning and experience.

Dedicated supervisory support is also offered to students completing their dissertation in the final year of the programme.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods, including work-based projects, individual and group presentations, and, to gain the masters award, the submission of a 10,000 word dissertation.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes.

On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical awareness and systematic understanding of seminal and contemporary theories of leadership and management
  • Communicate a critical awareness of the complex nature of leadership and management theories within a wider organisational and contextual framework
  • Formulate and appraise personal leadership and management skills through self-reflection, personal development planning, analytical thinking and awareness of personal effectiveness
  • Communicate effective academic scholarship skills by judging and systematically presenting arguments from credible sources of information, both orally and in writing, using a range of media

On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management you should, in addition to the above, be able to:

  • Identify and critically analyse the key leadership and management issues that impact on organisations at a strategic level and appreciate the conflicting pressures from the external environment
  • Critically assess and creatively apply contemporary theories of leadership and management to real life organisations and industries with a specific focus on key areas which affect relationships between business functions and teams
  • Evaluate the credibility and rigour of published research and asses its relevance to modern organisations and industries of today

On successful completion of the Masters in Leadership and Management students you should, in addition to all of the above, be able to:

  • Critically evaluate research methodologies and propose a research pathway which demonstrates reliability, validity and coherence through autonomous planning
  • Select a relevant leadership and management issue and demonstrate a critical awareness of seminal and contemporary theories through originality in the application of knowledge
  • Acquire and analyse primary and/or secondary data demonstrating an understanding of ethical approaches to gathering data for research purposes
  • Synthesise academic theory with independently gathered research data and construct an argument to form recommendations and conclusions for the industry or organisation of choice
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of coaching and mentoring and the theories and practices of strategic leadership

Throughout the course, teaching is conducted across five Fridays throughout each semester. Each day of teaching runs from 9.30 until 16.00.

In addition to the above face-to-face teaching, additional support is offered through online materials.

You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of further self-directed studying in your own time each week, in particular towards the dissertation element of the MA qualification.

EU student fees

EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.

For tuition fee loans

EU nationals must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

For maintenance loans

The course aims for students to emerge with well-developed powers of self-reflection, clear perspectives on strategy and strategic thinking, and highly effective management and research skills. All of these skills are demanded by employers in private, public, and third sector organisations around the world.

Graduates from the MA should be well informed to face the challenges of senior managers working in organisations in the twenty-first century.
