Overview

This clinically focused course aims to enable physiotherapists and sports therapists to develop and extend their knowledge and skills.

The course is designed to provide advanced management of patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders and to assist in the delivery of effective health care services.

Hospital Wards

We have two fully-equipped mock hospital wards, each containing 4 beds. The wards are built to NHS standards and contain moveable beds, first aid equipment and patient monitoring tools.

Life Sciences Research

Our facilities include a real ambulance, which students can use as part of their studies, and a purpose-built Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre. This allows for much improved training quality in patient care and patient safety.

Strength and Conditioning Suite

Our multi-purpose strength and conditioning suite is equipped with multiple Olympic lifting platforms, a 20m gait analysis track, an anti-gravity treadmill and even a 3D motion capture system!

After successfully completing this course, you will gain:

  • A deep and extensive knowledge of the current theories, approaches and research evidence, which underpin contemporary manual therapy practice.
  • A high level of clinical reasoning skills essential to advanced practice including reflection, analysis and self-evaluation.
  • The ability to critically appraise the current evidence base for clinical practice.
  • Expertise in the assessment and management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.
  • A sound working knowledge of research methodologies and their application.
  • A high level of communication skills essential for specialist roles and for working within a multidisciplinary team.
  • An understanding of the importance of clinical outcome measures in the development and justification of professional knowledge and clinical practice.
  • Increased confidence in the management of musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Clinical expertise within the musculoskeletal field.

The Manual Therapy programme of study consists of three awards:

  • MSc Manual Therapy (180 credits)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Manual Therapy (120 credits)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Manual Therapy (60 credits)

 

The course is available either as full-time study, or as a part-time course where you study up to 5 years.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

Applicants should hold the equivalent of a 2:1 undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy, and one year’s postgraduate experience in the musculoskeletal field of practice. Applicants with a 2:2 and relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

Applicants wanting membership of the UK Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) must also be both:

  • a member of the UK Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • registered with the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Applicants should hold the equivalent of a 2:1 undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy, and one year’s postgraduate experience in the musculoskeletal field of practice. Applicants with a 2:2 and relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

The course aims to enable students to advance their careers by preparing them for a wide variety of senior and specialist roles within the neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy fields of practice.
