More than 40 Indonesian students are aiming to gain valuable experience with high-profile UK companies during a four-month stay with Coventry University.

The University’s Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) are hosting the students as part of the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards for Vocational Students (IISMAVO).

The students, who are the largest IISMAVO group to be hosted in the UK, are based in Coventry for a unique programme of activities created by the research centre, including industry focused work placements with Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, Unipart Logistics and Malone Group.

They are also visiting other leading businesses including Morgan Motor Company, Mini, JCB, Brompton, Triumph, Bloomberg, and Manchester City Football Club.

IISMAVO is funded by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Indonesia and is designed to narrow the gap between industry and education in the country by enabling students to learn in collaboration with organisations overseas.

CBiS were chosen to host the prestigious scheme over several other institutions in 2022 due to Coventry University’s rich experience in vocational education and strong business links.

To celebrate the achievements of the students, several delegates from the Indonesian Embassy were invited to the University, including Dr Ir. Kiki Yuliati, Director General of Vocational Education from the Ministry, Dr Beny Bandanadjaja, Academic Director of Vocational Higher Education, and Professor Khairul Munadi, Education and Culture Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, where they met with the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Richard Dashwood and programme lead at CBiS, Professor Benny Tjahjono.

Dr Kiki Yuliati believes that student and staff mobility, a transformational framework of collaborative research, and the internationalisation of education are vital. She said:

I appreciate Coventry University's commitment to international education, mobility, and research. With its outstanding reputation, especially in working with various industries in educational settings, I have no doubt that the university is a splendid place for Indonesian vocational education students and academics.

Dr Kiki Yuliati

The programme demonstrates just a small part of the University’s long-standing relationship with the Indonesian Government, supported by its role in the UK-Indonesian consortium, (UKICIS) which aims to build global resilience against pandemics, the climate emergency and natural hazards.

Coventry’s IISMAVO scheme offers unrivalled, innovative, and content-rich programmes, enabling us to work on real industry projects sponsored by global companies in the UK. This amazing experience is extremely valuable for us.

Taufiq Hidayat, IISMAVO Coventry student

This large number of contingents demonstrates the trust given by the Directorate General of Vocational Education to us and their commitment to continuing the profound relationship between Coventry University and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.

Professor Benny Tjahjono
