For many young people, A-level, BTEC and T level results day can feel like the moment their future is decided. Whether you've spent months worrying about getting the grades for your first-choice university or counting down the days until you can finally make plans for September, it's easy to feel as though everything depends on one morning in August. But life is rarely that straightforward.

Some students will get the grades they were hoping for, some will do better than expected and others may find things haven't gone quite to plan. Many will discover that opening their results sparks an entirely different question altogether: is this still what I want?

The good news is that changing your mind is perfectly okay. Dr Katherine Hall, Assistant Professor in Psychology at Coventry University, says results day shouldn't be seen as the finish line but the beginning of a new chapter.

Dr Hall shares her top tips for navigating results day:

Give yourself time to take it all in

Whether you're celebrating, feeling disappointed or simply surprised by your results, it's important to give yourself time to process how you're feeling. There's often pressure to make decisions immediately on results day but it's okay to pause, ask questions and consider your options.

If things haven't gone to plan, try not to panic. Equally, if you've done better than expected, don't feel guilty about reconsidering the choices you've already made. You don't owe anyone the future you imagined six months ago. It's perfectly normal for our goals and ambitions to change as we grow and gain new experiences.

A change of plan isn't a failure

We're often taught to think of success as following one carefully planned route but most people's lives don't work that way. Changing direction isn't admitting defeat – it's adapting to new circumstances.

Perhaps you've exceeded your predicted grades and want to explore courses you didn't previously consider. Maybe you've realised your original university choice doesn't feel right anymore or perhaps you're now considering an entirely different path.

Whatever your situation, it's worth remembering that changing your mind isn't something you need to apologise for. Some of the most rewarding opportunities come from the plans we didn't originally make.

It's time to rethink Clearing

For too long, Clearing has been viewed as something that's only for students who didn't get the grades they hoped for. The reality is very different.

Every year thousands of students use Clearing for a whole range of reasons. Some have changed their minds about where or what they want to study, some have achieved better results than expected and want to explore different opportunities, while others simply discover a course or university that's a better fit for them.

Clearing isn't about settling for second best – it's about finding what's right for you. Keeping an open mind could lead you to opportunities you hadn't previously considered and, for many students, can become the start of an exciting and unexpected journey.

Focus on what matters most to you

When thinking about your next steps, try to look beyond the grades themselves. Ask yourself what you want from university and from your future career. What kind of environment will help you thrive? What subjects genuinely excite you? What opportunities matter most to you?

Results day is just one part of a much bigger picture

The decisions you make now don't have to define the rest of your life and very few people's careers follow the path they imagined when they were 18.

Your story doesn't end here

It's easy to place enormous pressure on results day, but it's important to remember that this is simply one moment in your journey. The qualities that will shape your future aren't just academic achievement – they're resilience, curiosity and the confidence to adapt when circumstances change.

Some people feel that changing direction means failure but that's simply not true. Being able to reassess your options and make decisions that are right for you is a real strength.
Whether you're celebrating today, considering different opportunities or completely rethinking your plans, remember that there isn't only one route to success. Your future isn't determined by one set of results – it's shaped by the choices you make next.

A change of plan isn't the end of the story. Sometimes, it's where the best chapters begin.
