Why I chose Sustainability and Environmental Management MSc

When Mercy moved from Kenya to study Sustainability and Environmental Management at Coventry University, she already had experience working as an Environment and Natural Resources Officer. She wasn't looking to start over; she wanted to build on what she already knew, broaden her perspective and prepare for the next stage of her career.

"I wanted to build on my experience by gaining a broader understanding of sustainability from a global perspective," Mercy explains. "Coventry University's course stood out because it combines environmental policy, management and practical learning, aligning with the direction I wanted my career to take."

Today, Mercy looks back on her postgraduate journey as one that has not only developed her academic knowledge but also helped build her confidence, leadership skills and ambition to make a positive impact through sustainability.

Learning about sustainability through practical experience

For Mercy, one of the biggest strengths of the course has been its practical approach.

"I enjoy how practical the course is," she says. "We've explored real environmental challenges through case studies, discussions and projects rather than just learning theory. It's also encouraged me to think critically and see sustainability from different perspectives."

This combination of academic learning and practical application has helped Mercy connect her previous professional experience with new ideas and global sustainability challenges.

Growing beyond the Classroom

Studying overseas has been about much more than earning a postgraduate qualification.

Moving from Kenya to the UK gave Mercy the opportunity to experience a new culture, broaden her perspective and challenge herself in different ways. Alongside her studies, she embraced opportunities to get involved in university life, helping her grow both personally and professionally.

"I've grown in confidence, especially through presenting my work, working with people from different backgrounds and taking on leadership roles at the university."

Making the most of opportunities beyond the classroom

Alongside her studies, Mercy has made the most of opportunities to get involved in university life. Becoming a Student Ambassador has been one of the highlights of her time at Coventry University, allowing her to meet prospective students and share her experiences of studying in the UK. She's also supported the university community as a course representative and a peer advisor with Phoenix+, helping current students navigate university life.

"They've helped me build confidence, strengthen my communication skills and meet people from many different backgrounds."

Building skills for a career in sustainability

For Mercy, one of the biggest benefits of the course has been the opportunity to apply what she's learned to real sustainability challenges. Combining academic study with practical projects has helped her build the skills and confidence needed for an international career.

"The course has strengthened my research, analytical and problem-solving skills and provided opportunities to apply my learning through projects and case studies. It has also helped me connect my previous professional experience with current sustainability challenges and given me greater confidence to work in international environments."

Looking ahead, Mercy hopes to build a career in environmental consultancy or sustainability, helping organisations develop practical environmental solutions while ensuring local communities are part of the conversation.

Looking further ahead, she hopes to contribute to environmental policy and conservation across Africa.

Advice for future Sustainability and Environmental Management MSc students

When asked what advice she would give to prospective students, Mercy encourages them to make the most of every opportunity university offers.

"Come with an open mind and make the most of every opportunity. Don't be afraid to ask questions, get involved in discussions and connect with your lecturers and classmates. The more you engage with the course, the more rewarding it becomes."

She also believes sustainability is a field with growing opportunities across many sectors.

"Sustainability affects every sector, so the course opens up a wide range of career opportunities. It also gives you the chance to explore real environmental issues and develop practical skills that are useful beyond the classroom."
