Somatic Practice and Chronic Pain Network (SPCPN) invite you to a webinar:
"Let's Discuss the Diversity of Chronic Pain".

The session will be led by Rosa Cisneros, Associate Professor in Dance, Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University and Eugenia Kim, Interdisciplinary creator and researcher, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The description of ‘chronic pain’ that is most used is based on the IASP definition: “pain that persists or recurs for longer than 3 months”. Yet this description tells us very little about the individual living with chronic pain – their body, their type(s) of pain, their living circumstances, and their overall experience.

In this discussion webinar, we open with a brief provocation consisting of facts related to chronic pain. These include:

  • The scientific categories of pain types
  • Common sources of chronic pain
  • Non-physical conditions that can co-exist with chronic pain
  • Demographic factors (i.e., age, race, gender, location) that affect chronic pain
  • Socioeconomic factors (i.e., income, education, employment) that affect chronic pain

We will then open the floor for open discussion around (but not limited to) the following questions:

  • As a dance/somatic practitioner or healthcare professional, do you take into account these factors when working with someone living with chronic pain?
  • As a person living with chronic pain, do you think about how these factors affect your experience and approach to chronic pain?
  • What are ways that dance & somatic practices already address the diversity of chronic pain? What could be done better?
