The plight of refugees around the world has shot to prominence in public and political debates over recent years. Around 65 million people around the world have been displaced by armed conflict or human rights violations. Many of them face years of uncertainty in exile and camps such as Dadaab in Kenya or Zaatari in Jordan have grown to the size of cities. As a result, the refugee system has been roundly criticised and calls have gone up around the world for reforms and new ways of thinking about solving ‘the global refugee crisis’.
For this Breakfast Briefing, Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre with the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations invite you to reflect on what is meant by the ‘refugee crisis’ and the possible responses. Is there really a crisis? Where is it and who does it involve? What is life like for refugees around the world? And what is the best response for people fleeing conflict and persecution?
A discussion among our panellists will be followed by the film ‘Warehoused’, a documentary offering an intimate glimpse into daily life at the world’s largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. The film foregrounds refugee’s personal stories, shining light on their hopes, fears, courage and perseverance.
