English language tests

Similar to IELTS, the CUET assesses all 4 components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It will take up to 4 hours to complete.

• Listening (30 mins) - you will be given three recordings to listen to. You must answer questions related to these recordings.
• Reading (60 mins) - you will be given three pieces of text to read. You must answer questions relating to each text.
• Writing (60 mins) - you will be expected to give written responses to the two prompts given, one response for each prompt.
• Speaking (up to 12 mins) - you will have a short interview with the examiner where you will be asked questions on a variety of subjects.

You can book to take the Coventry University English language test if you:

• Hold a conditional offer for study at Coventry University, Coventry University London, CU Coventry, CU London, CU Scarborough, our Wroclaw campus, or NITE. It is also accepted by some of our TNE partner universities.
• Have not taken the Coventry University English language test in the last 2 months for the same academic intake.
• Have not undertaken a pre-sessional English course at Coventry University in the last 2 months.

We recommend having an IELTS score with a minimum of 5.0 on all components for entry onto an undergraduate course, or a minimum of 5.5 on all components for entry onto a postgraduate course. The IELTS component levels are provided as guidance only and alternative previous English language study will be considered.

Students from the following regions of India are currently unable to take a Coventry University English Test to meet English requirements: Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand.

You will need the following documents for the test:

• Proof of your identity (passport) at registration. You must bring the same identity document on the test day as the one recorded on your booking form. If you do not do this, you will not be allowed to take the test and you will not be eligible for a refund or transfer.
• A photocopy of your ID (passport or national identity card).
• Your original, valid IELTS certificate (or agreed alternative, see entry criteria above).
• Your conditional offer letter from Coventry University.

Results are not transferable to any other institution; they are only valid for study at Coventry University, Coventry University London, CU Coventry, CU London, CU Scarborough, our Wroclaw campus, or NITE. The Coventry University English Test (CUET) is an online English language assessment accepted by Coventry University as evidence of English proficiency for eligible applicants. CUET is delivered through Duolingo’s assessment platform and uses Duolingo testing technology and scoring systems to assess English language proficiency across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills.

Applicants who successfully achieve the required CUET score may use the result to satisfy Coventry University English language entry requirements, subject to programme and visa eligibility requirements. CUET results are reviewed and accepted solely for applications to Coventry University and cannot be used outside the Coventry University admissions process.

Internet connection with at least 2 Mbps download speed and 1 Mbps upload speed. We recommend using a stable, wired ethernet internet connection instead of Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot services.
