Get your finances in place

Finances

Starting your course is exciting, but sorting your finances early can make a big difference. This guide breaks down the essentials to help you get prepared and feel confident managing your money.

How to pay your tuition fees

Undergraduate tuition fees funded by the Student Loans Company

If you're getting funding through the Student Loans Company (SLC), your tuition fees will be paid directly to us each year. You don’t need to do anything after your loan is approved, just make sure you’ve completed enrolment and started your course.

If you haven't applied for your student finance yet, please do it as soon as possible.

If you miss the deadline to apply for student finance, your funds may not be paid to you by the start of term. If this happens, you should bring enough money with you to cover your expenses until your loan arrives.

When you apply, you’ll get a customer reference number and you’ll need to choose a password and secret answer. Keep these safe, as you'll need them for any queries about your funding, and to access online services.

For more information, visit Coventry University Undergraduate Finance.

Undergraduate or postgraduate self-funded students

If you’re paying your own tuition fees, you’ll need to pay them directly to us. The easiest way to do this is online using Convera GlobalPay.

Make sure you’re aware of the payment deadlines and allow enough time for your payment to be processed before your course starts. This will help you avoid delays in starting your course or accessing facilities.

You may be able to pay in instalments. For full details, please refer to our Tuition fee terms and conditions.

International students

As an international student, it's essential to plan your finances before you start your studies so you have enough money to cover your tuition fees AND living costs. If you’re in the UK on a student visa, your ability to stay and study here depends on meeting these financial requirements.

If you're self-funding, you can pay securely online using Convera GlobalPay. Find out everything you need to know about paying your fees.

Make sure you know when your tuition fees are due, it’s your responsibility to pay on time. If you don’t, you could lose access to key systems and facilities you need for your course, and it might even affect your visa status so set reminders and stay on top of your payments.

Scholarships and financial aid

We have scholarships and bursaries available based on:

  • Academic excellence
  • Sports achievements
  • Financial need

These awards can really reduce financial pressures, letting you focus on your studies. If you’re eligible, it’s definitely worth applying.

The deadline for scholarships is usually in early October. For 2025 entry, it’s Friday 4 October, don’t miss it!

Managing living costs

Staying in control of living expenses is an important part of student life.

  • Budget and plan: Use a budgeting tool to track your income and expenses.
Find part-time work: Look for flexible jobs that fit around your studies.
  • Student discounts: Save on books, clothes, food, and more with TOTUM, UNiDAYS, and Student Beans.
  • Save on energy bills: Study in the library to save on heating, and switch to LED bulbs at home.

Visit our Cost of Living Hub.

International students

Open a UK bank account as soon as you arrive. You’ll need this to get any refunds, part-time wages, or financial support. Most banks need proof of address and your student status. Find out more about opening a bank account.

Apply for a National Insurance (NI) number if you plan to work in the UK. You’ll need this for all employment, including part-time jobs. You can apply online when you have a UK address.

A National Insurance Number is a number that is unique to you. It’s a legal requirement and your employer will need it to pay your National Insurance contributions. No one else can use this number and it’s not related to health insurance.

National Insurance Numbers are free, never pay an online service to generate a number for you.

You don’t need a National Insurance Number to prove you have the right to work in the UK, but you will need one when you get a job. If you’re actively applying for jobs, you should apply for a National Insurance Number as soon as possible so you have it before you start working.

As an international student, it’s important to know the rules around how much you can work while you study in the UK.

Meet UKVI financial requirements for your visa.

To get your UK student visa, you must show you have enough money to cover your tuition and living costs. You’ll need to provide proof when you apply—and possibly again during your studies—so it’s important to keep your financial documents up to date and you budget accordingly.
