Course information

Put the high-level strategy behind your understanding of marketing. The skills you learn on this course will equip you to lead organisations towards greater business success – even against a backdrop of constant societal, technological, economic and consumer change.

Marketing is a fascinating discipline which should be the umbrella above every business function. This strategic approach to marketing is the key to sustainable success, since it is what connects the business with the buyer, and vice versa.

This course will enhance your understanding of strategic marketing and its role within business, and help you understand how to meet the needs of a range of stakeholders. You’ll learn to track and respond to significant and far-reaching economic, social, technological and geo-political changes affecting the world today. Such changes are triggering new market realities, demanding different patterns of thinking and behaviour from those who wish to manage and lead in this field.

This course offers a joint award: passing 2 specific modules will make you eligible for the CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership.

12th

Coventry University has climbed the rankings again to 12th in the UK Guardian University Guide 2018

In more detail...

  • Coventry University is ranked no 12 in the UK (The Guardian University League Tables 2018)
  • Choose to follow a pathway specialising in international finance, global business or international marketing
  • You could gain an additional qualification: CMI Certificate Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership
  • This course has been developed in consultation with employers across a range of private and public sectors, as well as professional associations
  • To help kick-start your future, we can offer essential training in CV-writing, presentation skills and interview techniques
  • If it’s what you’re interested in, our Employability Team will offer free business start-up advice and support during the course.

Your main study themes are:

  • Innovation – this course encourages students to challenge existing methods, and to seek ways in which current managerial paradigms might be re-thought to produce new patterns of thinking.
  • Creativity – while marketing is often about finding ‘the new’ and about capturing consumer attention in the most engaging and insightful ways , creativity also brings an invaluable dimension to strategic thinking and problem-solving.
  • Problem-solving – you’ll learn to identify and analyse a wide range of problems in international marketing, and how to formulate smarter strategies for resolving them.
  • Digital – the internet and apps now represent the dominant way for businesses to meet and engage with audiences, so advanced skills are essential. This course also uses technology as a tool, including software to help plan international expansion.

We maintain strong relationships with professional associations and employers, especially when it comes to curriculum design, so what you’ll learn is a true reflection of what’s current in industry and the skills that employers are looking for.

There is a real emphasis on applied learning. Our action-learning approach focuses on group work, business simulations and real-world activities such as live projects with clients in the private, public and third sectors (recently, one such project was for a previous contestant on TV’s The Apprentice, who now runs her own company). You could also undertake an internship to gain work experience in your final term.

Your tutors will arrange stimulating guest lectures from industry professionals; in the past, this has included Google personnel. They will also organise visits to businesses, such as Unruly (a digital video agency) and events, such as the Digital Marketing Show and/or Technology for Marketing.

Your learning will be underpinned by the latest technology. For example, we use audience response systems in the classroom to get immediate feedback on students’ level of understanding in each session, and to identify specific issues to focus on. You’ll have the opportunity to learn software such as GMMSO (Global Marketing Management System Online), designed to help businesses enter or expand their presence in foreign markets.

Audio/visual materials also bring the curriculum to life through recorded interviews with business leaders. Key lectures and seminars are recorded so that you can review them later, and you can record your own board presentations as part of your assessed work.

Teaching methods include: Lectures, seminars, workshops, debates, case studies, consultancy projects, simulations, business plans, online collaborations.

The assessments on this MBA programme are designed to reflect the work you’ll undertake in industry, helping you to prepare for the workplace and for appraisals there. Your tutors will take an employer’s perspective, as well as an academic one, when assessing the content and delivery of your work. This will enable you to become increasingly self-aware in assessing and improving your own performance, which will be valuable throughout your career.

You will be assessed regularly during the course, rather than relying on a few major events. This will help you to stay focused on your ongoing learning, and will enable both you and your tutors to be aware at all times of how you’re performing and where you may need some additional study or support.

You’ll be encouraged to prove your subject knowledge while demonstrating your ability to write professional reports, structure logical arguments, analyse data, and make compelling presentations. Your assessments will therefore consist of a mixture of seminar and workshop activities, debates, presentations, written assignments, and individual and group work.

On completion, you’ll be able to:

  • describe the impact of external forces on marketing and business – such as legal systems; corporate governance; and ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues
  • develop intelligent, well-informed and creative marketing strategies which target particular groups and in pursuit of a set of organisational goals
  • develop international markets for resources, goods and services, taking into account the expectations of customers and other stakeholders
  • understand how to harness the power of the brand in order to position and manage businesses,  products and services which have relevance and appeal among the target markets
  • describe consumer segmentation and profiling, and know how to orient products, services and communication towards selected segments and profiles
  • articulate the importance of innovation to business success
  • explore the contemporary challenges and opportunities in marketing and business against the backdrop of a market environment which is undergoing constant change
  • employ marketing strategies and techniques to deliver entrepreneurial success, or to promote entrepreneurial behaviour within an organisation.

In your final term, you’ll have the option to do an internship with a company in order to gain work experience. You could arrange for this to be done overseas: past students have gone to New York, Taiwan and Dubai, for example.

If you’re an international student, you could focus your applied work on your home country, and even on your family business.

Career prospects

Prepare to accelerate your career progression in international marketing – whether you take a holistic approach to all marketing disciplines or focus on a specialism of your choice.

This course will equip you with the high-level marketing, business and finance skills which employers are looking for in their future leaders. You’ll be able to pursue the professional, senior management and leadership roles which interest you in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Alternatively, you’ll have a higher chance of achieving success if you start your own business.

The international focus of your course means you could work almost anywhere. You could work for a multinational or a company which imports/exports, either in the UK or overseas. You’ll also have an excellent skillset for helping organisations to begin doing business internationally for the first time.

Where our graduates work

When you graduate, you might choose to join a business of any size, from a start-up (perhaps your own!) to an SME or a global enterprise. Your work could take you into industry and manufacturing, the services sector, or even the charity or humanitarian sectors.

You might decide to join, or start, a marketing services company/agency which supplies services to business. This would offer you a particular opportunity to specialise in areas such as market research, branding, public relations, IT, digital marketing, advertising or customer science.

Another option could be consultancy, perhaps with one of the world’s leading consulting firms. Alternatively, you might go into related fields such as journalism or product R&D.

What our students say...

I had a lot of opportunities to put my business skills into practice. My team won the Business Challenge championship, and I was accepted onto ‘High Flyer’, the development programme for top-performing students.
