Modules
In more detail...
Whether you're coming straight from your undergraduate degree or you’ve already been working in industry, the course has been designed to contain a balance of theory and practice. You'll have the chance to learn the essential theory behind project management, see it happening, and put it into practice.
Real-world
In addition to its strong academic basis, this course aims to maximise exposure to the business world. This could help to improve your opportunities on the jobs market and help to enhance your performance in the workplace. Throughout the course you could have chance to get involved with real client projects, business simulations, employer workshops, case studies, and periods of work experience.
Practical
This course is very practical. Just as you would in business, you will have the chance to work individually and in teams, and could produce reports, pitches, presentations, project plans, research and consulting. You could develop your ability to give, and to benefit from, constructive feedback from peers, tutors and employers.
Teaching
Our tutors have strong industry backgrounds; many are fellows of the CMI and HEA. Class sizes are small, so we aim to give students considerable personal attention. Your tutors aim to offer additional support wherever needed.
London
London is a fantastic place in which to study for a master's degree in International Project Management – in 2014 Forbes Magazine called London the most influential city in the world (beating New York, Paris and Singapore). Our campus is perfectly located for London’s financial district – the Square Mile and Canary Wharf – and you’ll be surrounded by a huge diversity of local and global firms, from exciting start-ups to established multi-nationals.
International experience
On every module, you'll have the chance to consider global issues, as well as more local issues seen through a global lens. Our tutors come from a number of different countries and you will have the chance to study as part of an international cohort of students; this could help to develop your ability to work effectively with people from other cultures and learn from their perspectives. There could be opportunities for you to travel internationally for field trips, and to collaborate on projects with students at partner universities in other countries. There may be additional costs associated with this.

Your main study themes are:
- Professionalism – The course aims to prepare graduates to sit for a range of professional project management qualifications if you choose to do so (including PRINCE2, PMP, SCRUM and APM)
- Strategy – The focus is on leadership rather than simply management, which is why you could have the chance to explore business from strategic, holistic and global perspectives
- Flexibility – We recognise that different approaches suit different projects, so the course aims to equip students with a range of tools and techniques, according to the project context
- Application – The course does not simply aim to prepare graduates to become project managers, but aims to apply the best project management approaches in many business leadership roles (such as finance or operations).
Coventry University has been awarded ‘Gold’ in the UK government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (2017), so you can expect the highest standard of teaching here at our London campus. Many of our tutors have experience both in industry and academia, and could use their contacts to create opportunities for you and your fellow students.
Our teaching aims to focus on two key areas: practical application, and the international context. Much of your learning could involve taking action or solving problems, sometimes with links to real business examples or even live projects. You’ll have the opportunity to learn traditional and innovative project management tools and techniques and how to apply them to real-life projects.
Besides spending time in lectures and seminars, you could benefit from our guest lectures, workshops, competitions, and field trips in the UK and beyond. For your final major project, you could have the option to apply for an internship, a live consultancy project for a real client, or a dissertation.
Although we aim for you to have plenty of access to your tutors both during and after classes, you’ll be expected be a highly motivated independent learner. You could develop your self-directed study skills, pursuing academic reading and research in your own time while also gaining more practical experience by attending conferences and exhibitions, or arranging your own work experience in vacation time.
We’ve designed many highly practical, problem-solving assessment methods, aimed to help you prove what you’ve been taught and how you would apply it to a business situation. These assessments aim to measure your progress on the course and provide essential preparation for the workplace.
You might be assessed via business reports, pitches, case studies, conference presentations (video and speech), board papers, business plans, debates, quizzes, project performance reviews, online portfolios, podcasts, blogs, research proposals, and an exam.
Sometimes you’ll be assessed individually, and sometimes as part of a group. This is important, because it reflects both the kind of work you might do in industry and the way colleagues and managers could assess your performance there.
Assessments are ongoing, and getting feedback is an important part. You will have the opportunity to talk to your tutors regularly about where your strengths might lie and where you may need extra support. This additional input might come from your academic tutors themselves, or it might come from staff in the Learning Resource and IT Centre – who aim to help you to improve skills such as research, numeracy, technology, communication, problem-solving and group working.
The course aims to prepare students to:
- Understand and articulate the positive contribution which project management techniques can bring to functions right across the organisation – and around the world.
- Analyse the impact on projects and businesses of legal systems; ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues; international developments; and corporate governance.
- Orient businesses and projects to suit strategic objectives, diverse global markets, and the expectations of stakeholders.
- Apply the most appropriate and advanced approaches to the management of projects.
- Flexibly choose and adapt strategies for planning, managing and delivering projects in complex and unpredictable situations.
- Lead or work effectively with teams to develop, deliver and evaluate project strategies.
- Communicate, negotiate and manage conflict with a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge/expertise, including colleagues, clients and other stakeholders.
Every module on this master’s degree course takes a global perspective, so you will have the chance to consider projects and organisations from an internationalised viewpoint. Many of your tutors and fellow students will be from other countries, offering diverse contributions to your understanding of global business issues.
You could have opportunities for visits to other countries and/or to collaborate with students in other countries. If you wish, you’ll be free to arrange your professional placement in the country of your choice. Your fellow students might also provide superb international networking opportunities, which could last throughout your career! There may be additional costs associated with international opportunities.
