Overview

The Financial Technology (FinTech) MSc is aimed at students who are looking to gain a broad yet thorough understanding of the financial technology sector. The course features an innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum that helps students to develop the relevant hard and soft skills they will need for careers in FinTech.

In addition to traditional finance and IT programming skills, it integrates both real business and practical blended knowledge within the FinTech landscape and the hottest trends in technologies within the disruptive financial sector.

The course is perfect for any student looking for a master’s level FinTech course which is not only focused on technical computing/software engineering, but also incorporates elements of entrepreneurship, innovation, regulation, marketing and business strategy.

Extended Professional Practice

This MSc course is now available with Extended Professional Practice. This 18-month option is aimed at students who are looking to develop a deeper understanding of business in a very practical way. You will undertake two Professional Practice modules which will take the form of either an internship with a host organisation, or a campus-based professional experience. Students are expected to spend twenty-two weeks at one (or more) work setting(s), and will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice. After completing the extended professional practice students are required to produce a substantial problem-based piece of individual written work.

Course information

On the MSc Financial Technology (FinTech) course, you will learn how to navigate the ever-changing world of FinTech – a world fuelled by constant technological advancements and cutting-edge innovations.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have been given the chance to learn everything you need to start a prosperous career in financial technology – equipped with a fundamental skillset that is in high demand in the FinTech industry. Not only should you have a strong understanding of traditional finance and IT programming (such as Python), but also a well-balanced critical awareness of macroeconomic, ethical and regulatory constraints and knowledge of the hottest industry trends.

In your second semester, you will be given the choice between two ‘pathways’ – Innovation and Enterprise and Quantitative Finance. Innovation and Enterprise will give you a chance to develop your leadership and management skills, which will be vital if you choose to start your own FinTech company. Quantitative Finance is for anyone who wishes to focus on the more financial and technical aspects of the industry.

Overview

The course is designed to imitate the high-pressure environment of a career in FinTech. It offers a mixture of soft and hard skills, which are explored through individual and group projects. These projects reflect real-life situations, challenging you to come up with practical solutions to theoretical problems. It also features valuable technical skills which will be vital in your career – including data analytics, Python programming and Artificial Intelligence.

    Focuses on important concepts in the transformations within financial services, best practice in digital industries and the way firms are embracing the new rules of competition.

  • Entrepreneurial Finance

    Provides a deep and systematic understanding of key accounting and finance tools that are used for sound entrepreneurial decision-making.

  • Business Analytics and Python Programming

    This module focuses on developing your data analysis skills and knowledge critical to your development as business analysts using Python.

  • Risk & RegTech

    Provides an extensive and critical understanding of current issues and concerns regarding regulation and ethics in the financial services industry.

  • Empirical Finance and Accounting Research Methods

    Learn to use financial economics and econometrics and the most relevant research techniques for accounting & finance.

  • Artificial Intelligence in Finance

    Introduces you to Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Machine Learning (ML) technology and its potential applications in banking and finance with the use of Python.

    Financial Technologies for Business

    Provides an in-depth knowledge of current and emerging technologies in the financial sector, such as Blockchain Technology, the public cloud and robo-advisors. It further develops your critical analysis of the impact that these evolving technology models have on businesses, enabling you to make sound financial and business-related decisions in this disruptive environment.

    FinTech Innovation Strategy and Entrepreneurship

    An action-based learning module that offers insights into how business strategy intersects with innovation in finance.

Besides lecturers, seminars and our online learning platform ‘Moodle’, you’ll receive continuous exposure to the world of work. The course has been designed to be as practical as possible, enabling you to graduate as an experienced, work-ready individual with great employer appeal. To further ensure this, we have embedded technological aspects into every module.

Tutors organise trips to meet major brand-name companies, and arrange networking opportunities with business owners and managers. You may also have the opportunity to go on a field trip overseas, and have access to an active programme of high-profile guest speakers from the industry. In addition, there will opportunities for live projects with real business clients, such as assisting FinTech companies with market research.

It’s also important to learn from other members of your course, and you should see your fellow students as a source of new understanding. Our international students are encouraged to share experiences and perspectives from their home countries.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods may include formal examinations, coursework, tests, essays, practical or project work, group work, presentations, etc.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Show evidence of an advanced understanding of the main pillars of FinTech relating to the structure, transformation, disruption, risk and regulations to better operationalise their current and future impact on the global finance and banking industry.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and critical awareness of current technological problems, developments and/or new insights within the financial industry.
  • Critically assess various finance theories and techniques and practical skills of interpreting models to apply them to different asset classes in the context of FinTech.
  • Demonstrate critical awareness of the economic, political, regulatory and social environments in which FinTech operates, and the ethical considerations embedded in these global and societal operations.
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of sources and content of financial data and evidence, and independently use appropriate programming, statistical and econometrics skills for sound decision-making.
  • Consolidate and blend business knowledge and technical skills required in a range of areas in FinTech in order to generate and evaluate financial innovative ideas.
  • Demonstrate effective, rigorous and reflective skills of self-management and independence in terms of planning, behaviour, motivation, individual initiative and enterprise in order to meet the demands of the field of study in FinTech, while taking responsibility for personal learning and continuous professional development against clearly identified personal career-related goals.
