LGBTQIA+ Student Support

A place where you can be yourself

We want everyone to feel welcome, respected and supported at university. If you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, there’s support available across all our campuses.

From name change processes and inclusive student networks to wellbeing and safety services - we are here to support you.

Wellbeing support

You can talk to your Student Wellbeing Team about anything that is affecting your mental health or wellbeing, including issues related to your identity, relationships, confidence or coming out.

Appointments are confidential and you have the option for them to be in person, online or on the phone.

See the section on how to access support for more details.

Help with gender identity and transition

If you’re exploring your gender identity or thinking about transitioning, support is available.

  • You can speak with your Wellbeing Team about how you’re feeling, including any worries or practical questions
  • Staff can talk you through how to update your name or gender on university systems, and help you access any other support you may need
  • You can choose how you’d like to be addressed, in class, in emails and across university systems

You can also read more about updating your personal details on the Student Portal.

Find your people: LGBTQIA+ student community

We have an active LGBTQIA+ student community, supported by the Students’ Union. It’s a welcoming space to connect with others, join campaigns, attend events and feel part of student life.

See what’s happening and get involved with the Students’ Union LGBTQIA+ Community.

If there isn’t currently a group at your campus, the SU can help you start one or connect you with other students. You can also check the SU site regularly for updates on events and meetups.

Respect and safety for everyone

There’s no place for discrimination, bullying or hate in our community. If something makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, or if you witness something that worries you, you can speak to someone or make a report.

You don’t have to make a formal report to get support.

How to get help

  • Read our Dignity and Respect Policy to understand your rights and the standards we expect from everyone
  • Use Report + Support to report bullying, harassment or hate. You can report anonymously or ask for someone to contact you
  • Find out more about how to report bullying or hate crime.
