Fire safety
Fire safety might not be the first thing on your mind when starting university, but knowing what to do in an emergency can save lives. Being prepared and acting quickly is essential.
Fire evacuation: If you discover a fire, sound the alarm, evacuate immediately, and call 999. If you're on university property, use the SafeZone app to alert the Protection Service. When you hear a fire alarm, don’t assume it’s a drill - leave the building calmly, close doors behind you, avoid lifts, and head to the designated assembly point. Never re-enter until cleared by a Fire or Protection Officer.
Support for personal evacuation needs: Students who may need help evacuating, due to mobility, hearing, or other needs, should request a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). Contact the Welfare and Disabilities team for campus support, or Futurelets for accommodation assistance. Planning ahead ensures everyone can evacuate safely and confidently.
Visit our Fire Safety pages for more information about fire prevention and evacuation.
Electrical safety on campus
While modern electrical equipment is generally reliable, faults can pose serious risks, including electric shock and fire. For our guidelines for use and checks of electrical equipment please visit our Health and Safety pages.
