Everything you need to know about a CAS
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is an electronic document you’ll need to apply for your UK Student Visa under the UKVI Student Route.
It’s issued by Coventry University and includes a unique CAS number and a summary of your course, fees, and personal details. This is what UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) uses to process your visa.
Who gets a CAS?
We’ll issue your CAS once you’ve:
- Accepted your offer (this must be unconditional)
- Met all the conditions of your offer
- Paid your deposit
We’ll send your CAS to the email address you gave in your application. Please check it carefully. It’s your responsibility to make sure all the information is correct.
What your CAS includes
Your CAS will include:
- Your CAS number
- Course details (title, start and end dates)
- Sponsor licence details (including university address and study location)
- The qualifications we used to assess your offer
- Academic progression (if needed) - this shows how your new course builds on any previous UK study
- Your English language level
- Tuition fees and any payments made
- Your name and passport number
- Any scholarships awarded (if applicable)
How to get your CAS - New students
To get your CAS, you’ll need to:
- Accept your offer via UCAS, the Applicant Portal, or your agent
- Pay your deposit - the amount will be in your offer letter
- Complete your CAS Shield tasks (you’ll get a link by email)
In CAS Shield, you’ll:
- Confirm your personal details
- Share any previous UK study info
- Upload financial evidence (if asked)
Once everything is complete and verified, we’ll issue your CAS. We usually do this within 5 working days but it can take longer at busy times.
Pre-sessional English students
If you’re taking a pre-sessional English course before your degree:
- You’ll need to pay the full pre-sessional fee and the standard tuition fee for your main course
- You’ll get a CAS for your pre-sessional course
- You’ll need a second CAS later for your degree course
Continuing students
If your visa will expire before you finish your course (for example, if you're repeating modules or adding a placement), you’ll need a new CAS.
To request one:
- Visit the Returning International Overseas Students page
- Fill out a CAS request form
- Make sure you've paid your tuition fees
You may be eligible if:
- You’re repeating modules
- You’re progressing in a research degree
- You’re adding a placement or study abroad
- You’re returning after an interruption
- You’re switching from another visa type
You won’t be eligible if:
- You’ve finished your course and you're just waiting for results
- You have a long gap before returning
- Staying in the UK would take you over the UKVI’s 5-year limit for undergraduate study
