Information on extra costs
When you join us, there are some extra costs that are not included in your tuition fees.
Accommodation fees
Accommodation is a separate cost to your tuition fees.
If you plan to live in university-managed accommodation, here’s what you’ll need to pay before you arrive:
- An Advance Licence Fee of £90 to secure your room, this is deducted from your accommodation payments
- First rent payment before arrival (international students only)
You can choose to pay your university-managed accommodation all at once or to spread the cost over several instalments. If you go with instalments, be sure to keep a track of the payment dates and plan your budget so you don't miss any deadlines.

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) (for International students)
You'll need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This gives you access to NHS healthcare while you're in the UK.
Visa application fee (for International students)
If you're applying for a Student visa, you'll need to pay a visa application fee. This fee is separate from your university costs and must be paid directly to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) when you submit your visa application. For the latest details and payment instructions, please visit the official UK Government website.
Mobile phone SIM cards
When arriving in the UK, it’s highly recommended that students obtain a UK SIM card for their mobile phones. This allows for easier communication, access to local services, and cost-effective data usage. UK SIM cards are available on both pay-as-you-go and monthly contract plans, and can be purchased at airports, mobile phone shops, supermarkets, or online.
To get a SIM card, students typically need:
- An unlocked phone
- A UK address (for contract plans)
- Proof of identity (e.g., passport)
Having a UK SIM card helps students stay connected with university services, access maps and transport apps, and avoid high roaming charges from their home country provider.
Other potential costs
You may also want to budget for:
- Travel and transport
- Items for your accommodation such as bedding, kitchen items, cleaning products etc
- Stationery and printing
- Optional trips and activities
- Laptop or other tech equipment (if you don’t already have what you need)
- General living costs such as food, clothing etc
