Change your name on your student record

If your details have changed, you can update your name on your student record. You may need to do this if:

  • Your name is recorded incorrectly
  • You want to add or remove a middle name
  • Your name has changed (for example, marriage or divorce)
  • You are transgender and would like your name and/or gender updated.

Before you start

Your legal name is used on all official university records, including:

  • Student ID card
  • Student letters
  • Degree certificate.

You must ensure your name is correct before graduation, as changes cannot be made after the registration deadline.

Choose how to update your name

There are two ways to change your name:

  • Use the Registry route - for most name changes
  • Use the Welfare route - for transgender or non-binary students (with additional support).

Change your name (Registry route)

Step 1: Visit a Customer Services Desk

Bring your original ID (we’ll take a copy), such as:

  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Deed poll.

Find a Customer Service Desk.

Step 2: Get your student ID reprinted

You do not need a new card if you’re only adding a middle name.

Step 3: Check your details before graduation

  • You’ll see how your name will appear when you register for graduation
  • Changes cannot be made after the registration deadline.

You can find graduation information on our graduation webpages.

Change your name (Welfare route)

This route supports transgender and non-binary students through the process.

  • You can update your preferred name and/or gender in university systems
  • Your degree certificate will show your legal name until official documentation is provided
  • Relevant staff may be informed where needed to support you.

Step 1: Book an appointment

Step 2: Complete your request

The Welfare Team will send you a Request to Change Details form to complete.

Step 3: Attend your appointment

Bring:

  • Your completed form
  • Supporting documents (if requesting a legal name change), such as:
    • Deed poll
    • Passport
    • Statutory declaration
    • Birth certificate.

Your request will then be processed with Registry.

Step 4: Get your student ID reprinted

If you’re currently studying:

Not required if you’re only adding a middle name.

Step 5: Check your details before graduation

  • Review your name during graduation registration
  • Changes cannot be made after the deadline.
