Modular framework

All of our undergraduate degrees are built from modules. These are units of study with set credit values. You must pass all modules to achieve your award.

Learning blocks (modules)

  • 4 blocks at Level 3 – foundation stage (120 credits)
  • 4 blocks at Level 4 – HNC (120 credits)
  • 8 blocks, 4 at Level 3 and 4 at Level 4 – HND (240 credits)
  • 12 blocks, 4 blocks each at Levels 3, 4 and 5 – Honours degree (360 credits)
Modules are usually 30 credits each. This equates to approximately 300 study hours.

Foundation year stages

Our Foundation Year stages offer an introduction to your chosen subject and are an ideal route to higher level qualifications, helping you develop the necessary skills for further study.

A Foundation Year stage is made up of four six-week learning blocks (120 credits). It’s an integral part of a four-year degree course. Once you successfully complete your foundation stage you will have achieved 120 credits at level 3 and be eligible to automatically progress to a relevant degree course. The standard progression routes we offer are listed on our website although a number of our foundation stages can progress to other courses.

Module status

Your course will be made up of mandatory modules which are modules that must be taken. You must pass all modules on your course to obtain the relevant qualification.

Information on modules offered

Each module has a Module Descriptor that outlines:
  • aims and intended learning outcomes
  • indicative content
  • assessment methods
  • essential and recommended reading

You can find these in the Module Information Directory.
