Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, universities are legally required to help prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent duty.
What the University does
We take a balanced approach to meeting our Prevent obligations to uphold freedom of speech, academic freedom and the welfare of students and staff, in line with our legal responsibilities. We:
- assess risks of our students and staff being drawn into terrorism
- have robust policies and procedures in place to reduce that risk
- monitor external speakers and campus events
- provide staff training and student support
- maintain robust IT and safeguarding policies
- ensure our actions are proportionate to the level of risk.
Reporting concerns
If you have concerns that someone may be at risk of radicalisation, you must report your concerns to prevent.ss@coventry.ac.uk.
If you have a query about the University’s implementation of the Prevent duty, please contact Helen Fulford, Director of Registry Services and Academic Registrar (h.fulford@coventry.ac.uk; 02477652192).
Oversight and compliance
The Safeguarding, Welfare and Wellbeing Committee oversees how the University meets its Prevent duty. Our compliance is monitored by the Office for Students (OfS), which reviews how we manage risks and respond to incidents
