The CILEx route to becoming a lawyer is low cost, flexible and quick. At CU Coventry you can study CILEx Level 6 over two years full-time, or opt for a part-time route. Taking the Chartered Legal Executive lawyer route means you can earn-as-you-learn and gain valuable practical experience, as classes are delivered on Saturdays and in the evenings.
Why choose this course?
This course is stage 2 of academic training for students who wish to become Chartered Legal Executive lawyer and is designed for those who have achieved either the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in & Practice or who have an ordinary BA Law Degree (non-qualifying).
The CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice is set and assessed at Honours degree level. Once you have completed the Level 6 Diploma in Law & Practice you will gain graduate status, but you will need to complete a period of qualifying employment to be able to apply to become a CILEx Fellow/Lawyer and use the designation FCILEx after your name.
What will I learn?
Students are required to demonstrate a broad and detailed understanding of the law. The units are a combination of substantive law and Practice.
You will need to complete and pass 6 units including the two mandatory Professional Skills units (Client Care and Legal Research).

Teaching contact hours
CILEx Level 6 can be studied on either full-time in one year, or part-time over 2 years.
This course will be delivered on either:
Saturday half-day (optional modules) 9am-1pm or 2pm-6pm
Tuesday and Thursday (Civil Litigation and Contract Law) 6pm-10pm
Fees and funding
Course fee £2,200.
Funding is now available for all students over the age of 19 on the first day of the academic year. This is available from the Student Loans Company via the Advanced Learner Loan. This is subject to approval by the SFA.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?
After you complete the Level 6 Programme you will become a Chartered Legal Executive with graduate status. To become a CILEx fellow/lawyer you must complete the qualifying employment requirement.

For students wishing to dual qualify as solicitors, CILEx level 6 qualifications have exemptions with the SRA (Solicitors' Regulation Authority) for the Foundations of Legal Knowledge subjects, and candidates achieving the Level 6 Diploma in Law & Practice can use this qualification towards becoming a solicitor.
The CILEx qualification of (i.e. CILEx Fellowship/lawyer) will enable you to acquire exemption from the two-year training contract required by the SRA upon completion of the LPC course to become a solicitor. NB It is important that you contact the SRA to get full details, as this exemption is wholly at its discretion.
CILEx membership and exams registration
As this course is accredited by CILEx, you will need to pay a membership fee and exam registration fees directly to CILEx. You are advised to contact CILEx or visit their website for more information
When you enrol on a CILEx course you also need to become a member of CILEx to take any part of the CILEx Professional Qualification in Law. This is in addition to enrolling with a centre providing CILEx courses. You will not be allowed to take any examination or submit a professional skills coursework unless you are registered as a member of CILEx. Contact CILEx direct for further information on membership and exams registration.
Students will have to purchase their own manuals from the CILEx Law School website.
