Practical Experience
Throughout your studies, you will find that the course is underpinned with practical elements. Placements

- People - people are such a critical success factor within both sectors, it is essential you develop an appreciation of Human Resource Management (HRM) and the theories related to planning, recruitment, motivation and training. You will also look at performance management and employment legislation and regulations.
- Tourism - you will critically evaluate the emerging theme of sustainable tourism by examining real-world examples. You will gain a critical insight into the operating systems of the tourism industry from the perspective of the tour operator and will explore issues such as marketing, product development, subcontractor relations, the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), consumer relations and ethical consumerism.
- Finance - you will look at the sources, uses and management of finance, the use of accounting and other information systems for the management of hospitality and tourism. You will learn the financial data which can inform managerial decision making within both sectors. You will consider the methods used to analyse and interrogate also, along with accounting principles.
- Marketing - you will look at the theories related to marketing strategy, planning and implementation within the hospitality and tourism industries. You will deepen your understanding of the operational requirements of both sectors with a critical consideration of marketing strategy, including the emerging principles of relationship based marketing and how this can be applied in the hospitality and travel and tourism sectors.
- Entrepreneurship - you will be required to consider all aspects of hospitality, travel and tourism management from the perspective of the business owner. You will particularly focus on the skills and competencies required to be a successful entrepreneur in these sectors.
How you’ll be taught This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field.
Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work. We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Aula.
Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.
Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.
The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.
Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, oral presentations, tutorial tasks and assessments which take place at the end of each six-week block.
Breakdown of final grade assessment (approximate):
- 80% Coursework
- 20% Interactive Assessments
On completion, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the theoretical, analytical and practical aspects of policies, strategies and processes within a changing environment.
- Critically appraise theories related to the development of a tourism management strategy including, the risk factors that need to be considered in the development of a successful strategy, such as, country, currency, cultural and competitor risk.
- Develop appropriate research, alongside the ability to undertake reliable market research activities.
- Operate, lead and collaborate in a team to solve problems of a practical (experimental) nature and to provide appropriate solutions.
- Apply appropriate presentation and evaluation tools to establish the significance of research data produced.
Full-time
If you choose to study full-time you can expect up to 20 hours of learning activities per week, made up of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, online classes and independent learning.
Part-time
If you choose to study part-time you'll usually receive up to eleven hours per week of blended learning, including classes, tutorials and online learning. Outside of this, there will also be independent study and online support.
Please note: part-time courses run subject to numbers.
Previous students have had the opportunity to participate in international field trips to Barcelona, Munich, Paris, Prague, Amsterdam, Madrid and Dublin.
Students who have chosen to take placement years have secured global internships in New York, Florida, Dubai and a variety of European destinations.

We will consider other qualifications for a pre-result unconditional offer if you have an appropriate proven performance at GCSE (or equivalent) level and predicted grades in line with grades that we expect to see at A-level. Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: The International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).
An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So, if you don’t meet your predictions then your place is still guaranteed. However, we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.
