My research interests stem from my experiences and interactions with those removed from the dance sector. These encounters can involve wonderment or confusion concerning the possibility of dance study and academia. Therefore, my research is focused on exploring the concept of value and impact, dance as a creative tool and the uniqueness of dance as an educational discipline.
My current research is entitled ‘People Dancing: changing perceptions through inclusion and intervention.’ This research focuses on People Dancing’s project ’11 Million Reasons to Dance’, which aims to change public perceptions regarding disability and dance. I will explore the context within which the project is embedded, including PD’s work within their strand of Deaf and disabled dance and work to evaluate the project through thorough engagement with the venues, partners and artists involved.
Kathryn graduated with an MA in Education (Distinction) from University of Brighton (2016) and holds a first-class BA (Hons) in Dance Studies from Roehampton University (2010). Her Masters dissertation focused on the perceptions held by dance students as to the value of dance and its effect on life aspects, including education, relationships and wellbeing. Before starting her PhD, Kathryn was a Dance and Performing Arts teacher for four years and holds a PGCE (Dance) in Secondary Education and has been a guest lecturer at University of Brighton.
