Overview

This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge required to prepare you for a rewarding career in a number of healthcare professions.

You will understand the key contemporary issues relating to the roles of health professionals, including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, paramedics and operating department practitioners alongside the skills required to progress within higher education.

You will examine the importance of the professional values, standards and working practices required to support patient-centred care and support. This course will provide you with a level of academic and develop your self-confidence that will aid your transition to a relevant degree course and then the workplace.

All successful students on this course are guaranteed an interview for degree courses in nursing and allied health profession courses at Coventry University, subject to completing your application before the UCAS January deadline. You will be given an opportunity to begin to develop the skills and competences that relate to the successful study of the Health Professions and their regulatory bodies i.e. the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

After successful completion of the course, if you want to make an application to any nursing and allied health professional courses offered at Coventry University, then you will be supported in making your application.

Throughout this course you will be encouraged to develop your level 2 Literacy and Numeracy application to the vocational setting  in order to meet the entry requirements of your chosen degree course.

Modules

Overview

After successfully completing this course you will have gained knowledge and experience of working in a variety of health professions, acknowledging the professional values and standards required. You will also be well prepared to study at degree level. You will explore fundamental knowledge in areas such as anatomy, physiology and pathology and approaches to health and wellbeing In addition to the application of vocational numeracy and literacy.

You will also explore the role of professional bodies including the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the standards required for progression into the roles they cover. In addition this course will prepare you fully for the values based recruitment approach set out by Health Education England.

Modules

  • Skills for Academic and Professional Development in Nursing and the Allied Health Professions

    The aim of this module is to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the requirements of academic study by providing you with a range of skills to enable you to study at degree level.   Alongside this, successful completion of this module will give you an understanding of the vital role that literacy and numeracy plays in the health professions today.   You will meet the Level 2 Numeracy core content set out by the Department for Education through application to the vocational setting. 

  • Fundamentals of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Nursing and the Allied Health Professions

    The human body is a complex system performing a multitude of functions every day and like any system, it can malfunction for a variety of reasons.  This module introduces you to fundamental knowledge of anatomy and physiology and its relationship with health and disease.  You will be able to relate this knowledge and understanding of the working of the human body in order to enhance care and promote an individual’s full potential.  You have the opportunity to undertake practical activities including taking measurements of the cardio-vascular system, the respiratory system and of body temperature, using non-invasive techniques to investigate normal responses to routine variations in body functioning.

  • Introduction to Professional Practice and Regulatory Standards

    Successful completion of this module will enable you to become familiar with the professional and regulatory standards in relation to your chosen health profession. You will explore the current challenges to these within your chosen profession whilst exploring areas for good practice and service development. Issues around law and ethics, accountability and professionalism and clinical governance will become familiar discussion points.

    You will gain confidence in your ability to challenge practice through this knowledge and in relating it to your preferred profession.

    Professional resilience within the health professions will be discussed and strategies on how to achieve this and indeed its impact on delivering holistic care will be debated. You will be able to explore your own resilience and develop strategies that will support you with your future studies and career.

  • Approaches to Health and Wellbeing for the Health Professional

    This module will examine how health and wellbeing are viewed in society, enabling you to challenge definitions and perspectives of health and ill-health. Models of health will be explored alongside health beliefs allowing you to determine professional approaches to health and wellbeing. The impact of social determinants of health will be examined in order to identify the environmental conditions that promote good health for all.

    You will explore the role of Public Health - locally, nationally and internationally - as an essential aspect of the health professions. Health promotion strategies will be examined and their impact upon health behaviours debated giving you essential tools for working with community health.

    All modules are mandatory and have 2 assessments in each module.

    We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

In more detail...

You will receive approximately 18 hours of guided learning per week. This will be a combination of face-to-face teaching and online, blended learning support. There will also be smaller group tutorials every week.

You will be able to critique and evaluate given scenarios and insights relating the health professions and make recommendations to influence decision making and increase your professional awareness.

The inclusion of clinical insight days, virtual simulation experiences and the awareness of Technology Enhanced Care Services (TECS) will equip you with the necessary capacity to gain an accurate insight into the demands of your preferred profession. 

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the University may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

Assessments have been designed to reflect those that you will be able to develop and use within your future role within the health professions e.g.  a structured report, a professional debate and poster presentation.    In addition your assessments will prepare you for the interview process (values based recruitment) required for progression onto further study in the health professions.

Successful completion of this course is designed to enable you to progress, upon successful application and meeting the entry requirements (i.e. values based interview), to a range of degree courses that provide registration with professional bodies and enable you to practice as a registered healthcare professional. Our graduates from these degree courses work in a range of roles in both the NHS and private sector. They make a positive contribution to the quality of life of their patients, often at very difficult moments.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have A levels or equivalent qualifications and hold a Level 2 qualification (equivalent to GCSE) in English and Maths. Applicants with significant work experience will be considered on an individual basis. Please contact ukadmissions@coventry.ac.uk to discuss your individual circumstances. You could also consider the Access to Nursing course.

Each application will be considered on its merits and the final decision will be made by the course director. For information regarding what might amount to a ‘relevant work experience’ that would count, or ‘equivalent studies’ that would qualify, please contact ukadmissions@coventry.ac.uk.

Accounting & Finance Foundation Year

40 UCAS tariff points. All Foundation courses require 5 GCSEs at 9-4 including Maths and English, and at least one A2 level or a BTEC equivalent qualification.

Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: The International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).

An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So, if you don’t meet your predictions then your place is still guaranteed. However, we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.

No, the unconditional offer is only available to those who will take up their place in the year for which they applied.

If you don’t meet the entry requirements for this course, we have a number of programmes which upon completion, automatically qualifies you onto a place on this degree course, such as Foundation Years or Access to Higher Education Diplomas.
