Learn how modern computing systems are designed, secured and managed. This course helps you build the technical and business-focused skills to understand how digital systems connect people, services and decisions.

As a computing professional, you can help organisations solve problems, manage information, protect systems and improve how they work. This course gives you a broad foundation in computing and information systems, with a focus on how organisations use technology in business and enterprise settings.

You’ll move from core computing principles into more applied areas of organisational technology, developing your ability to analyse needs, design solutions and consider the wider professional, ethical and operational issues involved.

Through practical and project-based learning, you’ll have opportunities to apply your knowledge to realistic computing challenges and prepare for possible future routes across software, data, infrastructure, cyber security, business systems and IT service management.

Study one module at a time
Focus on one 30-credit module for six weeks, followed by an assessment week. This approach allows you to build your knowledge step by step, completing your assessments with support and feedback before moving on.

Modules

Software Design – 30 credits

This module provides a broad understanding of software design principles and programming methodologies. You begin by refining requirements, planning solutions and creating design specifications, before building a prototype for unit and integration testing.

As you develop fundamental programming skills, you will learn core control structures and problem-solving strategies common to most languages. This includes selecting or creating algorithms to solve both specific and generalised problems. The focus then shifts to design patterns, classes, objects and object-oriented programming, with abstract data types and memory management as key themes.

Finally, you are expected to deliver a software solution using industry-standard build processes. This involves documenting the solution through UML, including use case, class, sequence and activity diagrams, and managing version control through Git. You will then deploy the result into enterprise environments using DevOps and CI/CD.

Database Design – 30 credits

This module introduces you to the design, development and management of databases. Examine how organisations try to ensure data confidentiality, integrity and availability, and compare relational and NoSQL databases through the lens of CAP Theorem.

Develop a practical understanding of decomposition, access control and database transactions, including Commit and Rollback. Explore how organisations leverage data warehousing and caching and apply sorting and reporting techniques to this data to support strategic decision-making. By the end of this module, you should be able to create functions and views from multiple tables and generate comprehensive reports based on specific input criteria.

Networking Concepts – 30 credits

This module aims to give you a broad understanding of numbering systems and networking, with a focus on designing networks for business use. It covers the practical skills you need to design, build and manage multi-domain networks across different settings. Throughout the process, you will learn to apply the correct industry models and standards. To help you build your practical knowledge early on, the module includes regular formative assessments.

IT and Competitive Advantage – 30 credits

This module introduces you to how organisations develop their IT strategy to maintain a competitive position. You will consider how organisations have evolved their approach to IT to promote their message and support how they operate.

You will explore different business models, organisational requirements and the environments that influence business behaviour. You will also examine and apply approaches to improving IT infrastructure, including digital and cloud transformation.

This module will help you develop and articulate an awareness of how organisations make decisions at different levels. You will also explore the role of sustainability and social responsibility in IT growth strategy.

IT Infrastructure – 30 credits

Learn how to develop an architectural solution, with practical experience of configuring cloud infrastructure and integrating physical infrastructure into a hybrid solution.

You will develop your understanding of cloud computing concepts, including deployment models, different types of cloud solutions and supporting technologies. You will also explore the theory behind virtualisation, load balancing, principles of reliable, available and secure design, address translation, DMZs, VPNs, firewalls, directory services and remote access.

You will implement a hybrid infrastructure to meet the needs of a business, with services hosted in the cloud and physical computers linked to a cloud VPC through a VPN. Through this process, you will develop your understanding of Linux- and Windows-based server operating systems, the installation of services on these systems and the networking skills built earlier in the course.

Cyber Security in Practice – 30 credits

This module explores the software, network and infrastructure security measures that businesses may use to protect their systems and information.

You will develop your understanding of security protocols, cryptographic approaches and configuration settings used in network security environments. You will also examine contemporary case studies, including corporate theft, regulatory approaches to IT security and international co-operation between agencies and nation-states.

You will consider why effective system administration and management are important to the day-to-day security and performance of information systems. You will explore common attack techniques, including phishing, social engineering, malware, traffic interception, denial of service and theft, and learn how risk assessment and penetration testing can contribute to assurance.

Data Analytics and Business Intelligence – 30 credits

This module introduces statistics, data analytics, business intelligence and decision support systems in a business context.

You will explore how organisations use data analytics and business intelligence techniques to interpret information and support decision-making. You will also use relevant software, tools and techniques to work with data and present insights.

You will develop your understanding of probability, data visualisation, data mining, business intelligence and enterprise data management technologies.

Web and API Development – 30 credits

This module explores the design, development and testing of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and web applications, with a focus on availability, reliability and maintainability.

You will develop your understanding of web design and development standards, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), user experience and the human factors that shape the web design process. You will also explore user-centred design techniques to identify interface and functional requirements.

You will apply programming and database concepts to develop a web application, using DevOps techniques to support the design, development, testing and maintenance process. You will also document the design, development and testing stages of your work.

Compulsory

To help you explore a potential career path and apply your learning in a professional setting, you may be able to undertake a work placement² between your second and final years of study. Work placements can help you gain experience, develop transferable skills and better understand the type of work you may want to do in the future.

Placements are optional and are not guaranteed. You will need to apply for opportunities, and each placement must be approved before it can count towards your placement year. Employers or host organisations make the final selection decisions, and you may need to meet academic, conduct, right-to-work, visa or other eligibility requirements.

Key opportunities:

Complete an approved work placement: apply for practical experience related to your course and career ambitions, typically lasting at least 26 weeks.
Reflect on professional development: recognise and document the skills, knowledge and experience you gain during your time in industry.
Broaden your global perspective: where available, you may be able to apply for an international work or study opportunity. These opportunities may depend on availability, academic approval, eligibility, visa and travel requirements and additional costs.³

This optional year is non-credit-bearing. If you successfully complete it, your experience will be formally recognised on your final degree certificate.

Enterprise Information Systems – 30 credits

This module explores the development of enterprise information systems across different industries and sectors.

You will examine the connections between information systems, management practice, organisational models, financial and accounting procedures, intellectual property and human resource management. You will also consider business and management concerns, and how information systems support decision-making.

You will discuss legislative, ethical and social considerations, and develop your understanding of how management information can be used when communicating across different organisational levels.

Project and Service Management – 30 credits

Learn key project management components to manage projects in a business context. Learn about the system development lifecycle, project planning and IT projects monitoring procedures. Module content covers various IT service and support areas, including contemporary case studies, quality, continuous improvement and efficiency standards.

Compare different IT service management approaches in various business operations while developing your understanding of service support and quality improvement concepts. You will be encouraged to apply theories to expansive scenarios and critically evaluate your decisions.

Research Methods and Project Design – 30 credits

Building on knowledge from your first two years of the programme, you will propose an integrated project addressing a social, ethical or business-related need. This module equips you with the knowledge to plan your project and demonstrate its relevance within existing literature. You will define and justify an appropriate research design and data collection method while ensuring you meet all ethical considerations. Finally, you will reflect on and select suitable tools for effective project execution using industry-standard project management approaches.

Final Project Development and Delivery – 30 credits

The final year project allows you to demonstrate competence in areas such as cloud computing, software development, web applications, cyber security, business intelligence, networking, server management or IoT, depending on your chosen focus. You will apply academic knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios, providing an opportunity for independent research and substantial practical development.

You will submit a detailed academic report alongside your project, evidencing a critical review of relevant literature and assessing reliability, validity and significance. You will also reflect on the application of research methodologies and concepts within the context of your project.

Compulsory

We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. A typical 30-credit module requires 300 hours of study. Study hours are made up of teaching contact hours and guided and independent study.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours may vary, depending on where you are in your studies, but on average, you will have between 10 and 12 teaching and learning hours each week. You will also have the option to attend additional sessions, including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Guided and independent study

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You will be digging deeper into topics, reviewing what you’ve learnt and completing assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. As you progress to the end of your studies, you’ll spend more time on independent learning.

Online learning

As an innovative university, we use different teaching methods, including online tools and emerging technologies. So, some of your teaching hours and assessments may be delivered online.

**EU Support Bursary

Following the UK's exit from the European Union, we are offering financial support to all eligible EU students who wish to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree with us full-time. This bursary will be used to offset the cost of your tuition fees to bring them in line with that of UK students. Students studying a degree with a foundation year with us are not eligible for the bursary.

How do you know if you need to pay UK or international tuition fees?

We assess your fee status using the information in your application. This status determines your tuition fees and the scholarships or financial support you can get. The Department for Education sets the rules for who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees in England.

The regulations list which students can pay the home fee rate. Because these rules are complex, the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provides fee status guidance to help you find the right category. If you meet all the criteria for one category, your institution must charge you the home rate.

Facilities

Most of your learning will take place in our on-site computer labs. These labs contain industry-standard equipment so that you can learn using the same equipment as many industry professionals. 

All our facilities are located at Mile Lane, where the building has been designed to support collaboration, creativity and independent study. You can use the library, open-access IT suites and laptop loan scheme to help you study on campus or around your own schedule. 

The library offers a silent study area and access to an extensive collection of eBooks and online learning resources. Teaching spaces feature large screens to support interactive learning. Between classes, you can relax in indoor and outdoor social spaces, grab a coffee in the café, or speak to our student support and careers advice teams.

When available, you can also make the most of the facilities at the main Coventry University campus. 

You’ll use facilities through timetabled teaching, practical activities and relevant independent study. Access may vary by module, activity, capacity, supervision or safety requirements. Access may change or be limited where the University needs to follow public authority guidance, decisions or orders.
