A creative media design course with a multidisciplinary approach, the BA (Hons) Digital Design Consultancy degree is designed to ensure you gain practical media, business, digital design and marketing skills, enabling you to respond innovatively to client needs. This is a contemporary course, recognising the fast-paced industry in which successful graduates will enter; an industry which demands its employees are equipped with a toolkit of knowledge, innovations, agility and practical solutions to meet client needs.

Digital Design Consultants (DDCs) work with individual clients and businesses to determine what will boost their engagement and revenue. The multi-skilled digital design consultant will then craft those digital products, creating dynamic campaigns for their clients.

This course has been designed in conjunction with employers to meet the demands of the digital design industry and the need for DDCs to be agile producers of the future. To that end, those who successfully graduate will obtain a BA (Hons) Digital Design Consultancy in two years. This allows for a quicker route into industry, the possibility for less financial aid and the ability to apply your contemporary theoretical and practical knowledge to the workplace faster.

Course information

Digital Design Consultancy is a practical multimedia course that spans design, video, web marketing and animation disciplines.

Digital Design Consultants (DDCs) use their expertise of social media, media design, marketing and advertising, alongside good professional business practice, to advise clients about how to generate engaging material, such as animations, digital and printed promotional branding, and video productions to aid in their client’s business growth.

The independent learning focus embedded within the course will give future DDCs the confidence to produce the best quality deliverables for their clients, using the latest portable media equipment and digital technologies. Students are encouraged to think and act quickly, be creators and make products for their clients that inspire customers to invest.



You will learn the fundamental production skills in a range of multimedia disciplines including digital moving image production, 2D and interactive design, web design and professional consultancy skills. The creation, communication and management of digital products and projects will enable you to develop your entrepreneurial thinking and apply this to create effective products that will engage your client’s customers.


  • Professional Consultancy Skills

    This module covers the essential skills for working in a business and design and production studio environment. Key skills covered include research, how to interpret and negotiate client briefs, engaging with and using business analysis techniques and professional and academic communication skills.

  • Digital Media Principles

    A focus on visual communication takes the lead in this module. You will explore working with industry design and production software to construct creative products that engage with audiences. You'll undertake a range of informal and formally assessed projects which focus on branding and creating multimedia and viral content in addition to exploring storytelling techniques.

  • Interactive Design Principles

    Human-computer interaction, responsive design principles and visual communication are all explored across a range of platforms. You will engage with key concepts such as user experience, visual literacy and interface types.

  • Web Development Principles

    You will research, analyse and interact with a range of web-based materials in order to evaluate what makes a successful and effective website. You'll explore how to create structure, pages, scripting and how to engage with a workflow that will enable them to design their own site.

  • Communication Design

    The focus for this module is effective communication with audiences, clients and stakeholders. You will explore how to engage audiences through carefully thought out and constructed advertisements, campaigns and digital communications. You'll demonstrate the key marketing principles, branding techniques and strategies through a range of industry-led projects.

  • Digital Technology Application

    Motion graphics and animation techniques can drive audience engagement on a variety of platforms. You will explore how to create innovative and energetic products using a range of 3D, animation and post-production software.


The final year will provide you with opportunities to become a digital influencer. You will take ownership of a campaign which you will monitor and manage, in addition to learning how to teach others, promote your services to clients and become a change agent within the industry.


  • Agile Project Development

    You will learn how to negotiate the fast-paced and innovative discipline of mobile application development through agile project management techniques. You'll gain an understanding of operating systems, mobile platforms, developer tools and user experience design concepts to discover exciting new ideas for mobile applications.

  • Digital Entrepreneurship

    Understanding how businesses operate in order to trailblaze in developing new business opportunities is an invaluable skill for a DDC. You will learn how to evaluate new business and start-up opportunities in order to develop new models and innovative new digital ventures for clients.

  • Digital Influencer Skills

    The digital relationship between users and digital products is vital for any digital practitioner when considering the creation of digital material or services for their clients. This module will enable you to understand and use the tools needed to reach and influence client’s users through social media.

  • Digital Practitioner Skills

    When creating new and innovative digital products and systems, there will often be an existing workforce that will need to adapt and adopt them. The DDC will often be the expert in the room that clients will use to help their employees understand new technology platforms. This module will focus on enabling you to understand how you can use your creative production skills to teach others how to use the new technologies and platforms that you've created for a company or client.

  • Digital Strategy Project Management

    This module will offer students the invaluable experience of working within the budget and resources that a company already has or can afford and working creatively to create solutions in order to progress a project through to a successful conclusion. Key tools in project management, collaboration and effective communication will be utilised by students to work independently within a simulated work environment in order to achieve business targets and objectives.

  • Agile Design Solutions

    Self-promotion and energetic networking are essential for success as a DDC. This module will allow you to gain valuable experience in creating self-promotional materials and communicating with potential employers. You will plan, design and execute your own networking and expo event. Elevator pitching, interview techniques and talent showcasing are valuable skills explored in this module.

The Digital Design Consultancy role is part of a fast-paced and expanding industry. This course is taught as an accelerated two-year programme which is designed to support your development of the essential skills you need to get you employment-ready and into the industry quicker. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.

We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.

Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.

Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework, portfolios and group work which is more reflective of our learning model.

Full-time students are expected to attend CU Coventry every day of the week.
The majority of this will be face to face teaching, with the addition of individual and group tutorials and independent/online learning, as well as enhancement activities on Wednesdays.
Classes run daily and students are allocated to either:
Morning - 9am-1pm or
Afternoon - 2pm-6pm

Both morning and afternoon sessions have the addition of Enhancement Wednesdays when students can choose individualised learning activities between 9.30am-1.30pm to support their study, providing time in the afternoon to engage in clubs and societies.

Groups are kept at an average of 25-50 students per class. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

This course is offered as an accelerated degree programme, where you are able to study six blocks each year and finish in two academic years. You would still be eligible for both tuition fee loans and maintenance payments, which would be split across the six blocks evenly to ensure you are funded throughout the academic year. As a full-time student or part-time student resident in the UK or EU, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU Coventry from Student Finance England.

Each academic year we review our fee structure to ensure we're offering value for money to all our students. The 2020/21 fees are currently under review and will be available in autumn 2019. 

Career prospects

Graduates from BA Digital Design Consultancy can move into a variety of media-industry related jobs such as animation, moving image production and design. Graduates may also wish to explore a career in marketing and media management, in addition to exploring work as a freelancer.


The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase for UK and EU Students is expected to be in line with inflation. For international students, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
