What are the benefits of employing an apprentice?

Embracing apprenticeships can transform your business by fostering skill development in a cost-effective manner and helping to cultivate a positive workplace culture.

Investing in developing your own talent positions your business for long-term success, strengthens employee loyalty, and contributes to the growth of individuals and society.

  • Apprentices develop job-specific skills and competencies that meet your business's needs
  • Attract and retain quality candidates or upskill current employees
  • Learning is tailored to the workplace, addressing specific skills gaps
  • Apprenticeship Levy payers can use their Levy to fund apprenticeships
  • Non-Levy payers receive 95% funding for tuition and assessment through the Levy, with additional funding for micro-businesses and those employing care-leavers
  • Engage existing staff as they mentor and support apprentices
  • Lower payroll costs, as employers of apprentices under 25 are exempt from secondary Class 1 Employer National Insurance contributions on earnings up to the Upper Earnings Limit.
  • If you’re a business with fewer than 50 employees, the government will fund the entire apprenticeship.
  • All organisations receive an incentive payment of £1,000 for taking on an under 19-year-old

How much do I need to pay an apprentice?

How much time will my apprentice spend studying?

Employers must provide the equivalent of at least six hours per week for their apprentice to work on their apprenticeship, known as off-the-job training. Off-the-job training may include university lectures or working on specific tasks that contribute to the apprenticeship’s requirements. The scheduling of off-the-job training varies for each Standard; some follow a one-day-a-week model, while others follow a block model (e.g. three consecutive training days per month).

How do we employ an apprentice?

You recruit apprentices through your regular recruitment process. We can assist by promoting the role on the dedicated government site and our social media platforms. We’re also happy to collaborate with employers to ensure suitability from both academic and role perspectives before making offers.

What is expected of me as an employer?

Employers are expected to provide adequate time for the apprentice to complete their apprenticeship and ample workplace opportunities to develop and evidence the competencies of the apprenticeship standard. Employers participate in regular progress review meetings (every 3 months) and work in partnership with us to support the apprentice in achieving End-Point Assessment and completing the apprenticeship.

When will the apprenticeship start?

We offer a range of start dates for our apprenticeships. Many start in September/October, with additional dates in January and May. Some specific apprenticeships may have alternative start dates. Please contact us to discuss start dates for the apprenticeship you’re interested in.

What is the apprenticeship entry criteria?

The entry criteria varies depending on the apprenticeship. We aim to keep requirements flexible to open opportunities to as many individuals as possible. Certain apprenticeships require qualifications in maths and/or English, especially where mandated by a Professional or Regulatory body. For level 7 (master’s level) apprenticeships, an undergraduate degree may be required. To be eligible for apprenticeship funding, all apprentices must meet the criteria set by the ESFA

How long does an apprenticeship last?

The length of an apprenticeship varies by programme and may depend on any recognised prior learning. The apprenticeship agreement must cover the full duration of the apprenticeship.
