Unlocking teacher training opportunities in Ireland: the NITE iPGCE

As a teacher and school principal with years of experience in the Irish education system, I have always believed that the strength of our profession lies in the quality of training we offer those entering the classroom. My work as principal includes guiding newly qualified teachers (NQTs) through the Droichead process and mentoring newly appointed principals with OIDE, the government support service for teachers and school leaders.

Being an external assessor

In recent years, I have also had the privilege of serving as an External Assessor for the National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE) at Coventry University. Essentially, I act as an independent bridge between the school and the university. I visit our trainee teachers in their school settings, both virtually and in person, to observe their practice and ensure the high academic standards of Coventry University are being met. It is a quality-assurance role, but it is also one of celebration, where I witness theory turn into impactful classroom practice.

Through this role, I have seen first-hand the opportunities the International PGCE (iPGCE) offers aspiring teachers here in Ireland. For many, the hurdle to becoming a teacher is the need to relocate or pause their lives to attend a traditional university. NITE changes that narrative by providing a high-class, online programme that allows students to train while remaining in their own communities – and often their own schools – in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.

A robust support system

What stands out most about the NITE iPGCE with iQTS is the "wrap-around" support. Training to teach is demanding, but NITE trainees are never isolated. They benefit from:

  • The NITE Team: Highly qualified educators providing rigorous online academic training.
  • The School Community: Trainees are immersed in daily school life from day one, gaining significantly more "on-the-job" experience than traditional courses.
  • The Mentor: Each trainee is paired with an experienced in-school mentor. I have seen the dedication of these mentors in Irish schools; they provide the daily pedagogical and emotional guidance that transforms a trainee into a professional.

Reputable and cost-effective

This iPGCE with iQTS is a highly reputable, flexible qualification. Whether you are an SNA looking to step into a teaching role or a graduate who wants to stay in Ireland while earning a qualification from a top UK university, this course fits your life. It offers routes into primary, secondary and special education.

Crucially, many students I visit point to the comparative affordability of the course. When you factor in the ability to stay in your current home, the competitive tuition fees and the ability to maintain local commitments while studying, it represents a highly cost-effective route into the teaching profession.

Qualify right where you are!

If you have the passion to teach, you no longer need to leave home to find a pathway. The classroom is waiting for you right where you are!
