Liam Anderson is Head of Design and Technology and ECT Lead at Trinity School in Berkshire, he is a teacher and experienced middle leader in curriculum and pastoral leadership, initial teacher training, early career teacher induction. He is also Chair of Governors at The Winchcombe School. Having completed his MA in Educational Leadership with us this year, he reflects on the impact of the programme.

Developing a deeper understanding of leadership

Studying the MA Educational Leadership with the National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE) has been an incredibly valuable and rewarding experience. It has enabled me to build on my existing leadership knowledge, while developing a much deeper understanding of the theory and research that underpins effective educational leadership.

Prior to starting the MA, I had completed the National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL). While the NPQ provided highly practical and relevant leadership training, I wanted to deepen my theoretical understanding of leadership and leading impactful change. NITE’s MA immediately appealed to me because of its carefully structured programme and the focus of its modules on leadership theory, culture, people and teaching and learning. I felt that these areas would provide the perfect progression from my NPQ and strengthen my effectiveness as both an educational leader and strategic decision maker.

Applying learning across leadership roles

In my current roles as a secondary middle leader and chair of governors, I operate across both operational and strategic levels of leadership. I recognised that the content of the MA would support both aspects of my work, and this has certainly proved to be the case. The programme’s sequencing of the modules, starting with understanding myself as a leader, encouraged honest and critical reflection on my leadership identity and behaviours. This process helped me to consider what makes leadership truly effective and motivated me to explore and apply different leadership approaches across the varied school contexts in which I work.

Leading people, culture and change

Building on the foundation of understanding who I am as a leader, the modules focused on leading people and shaping culture have provided invaluable insights into the complexities of leading change in schools. They have deepened my understanding of the factors that influence leadership effectiveness, organisational culture and school improvement. Most importantly, they have equipped me with practical leadership models and frameworks that I have been able to apply directly when managing challenging situations in my day-to-day leadership roles. The course has encouraged me to think more critically, plan more strategically and approach leadership challenges with greater confidence and intention.

Assessments that reflect real leadership practice

One of the aspects I enjoyed the most is the variety of assessment methods. The combination of case studies, reflective writing and presentations focused on my own context has provided opportunities to learn about a range of leaders and settings, while also allowing me to demonstrate my learning in different ways. This has helped me to become a more adaptable and versatile leader.

Outstanding support and professional connections

The quality of the learning materials and support provided by NITE has been outstanding. The programme offers extensive opportunities for further reading and research, alongside engaging discussions with colleagues and fortnightly online tutorials led by experienced school leaders. One of my worries before starting the course was how the remote learning would work, but the online tutorials have created a valuable space for professional dialogue, reflection and sharing learning and I have been able to network and build relationships with associate lecturers and fellow leaders. The support from my associate lecturer, Charly Fox, has been exceptional, offering regular opportunities to discuss ideas and challenges, alongside insightful and constructive feedback on assignments, enabling me to approach assessments with greater confidence

A more confident and evidence-informed leader

Perhaps the most significant impact of the MA has been the development of a more critical and analytical approach to leadership. It has challenged me to scrutinise both my own leadership practice and the decisions made within educational settings. As a result, I now feel more empowered to contribute to senior leadership discussions, engage constructively with school improvement conversations and provide thoughtful and evidence-informed insights with greater confidence and credibility. The MA has not only strengthened my leadership knowledge but has also enhanced my effectiveness as a leader across all aspects of my professional practice.
