Introduction

In January 2025 Abdul started his iPGCE with iQTS Secondary maths at an international school in Uzbekistan. He kindly shared his experience of joining the course as a blog. Nearly a year on, as he completes the qualification, he has shared his experience of the course and hopes for the future.

Support and encouragement

As I approach the final phase of my course, I can confidently say that the level of support and encouragement I have received has been tremendous. From the initial onboarding sessions to ongoing academic guidance, the experience has been thoughtfully structured and highly student-centred. The university’s platforms such as Aula, FutureLearn, and PebblePad, have been vital tools in my professional development. The drop-in and technical support sessions offered early on gave me the confidence to navigate these systems effectively, while the workshops on academic writing, referencing, and assignment planning helped me to grow both as a reflective practitioner and as a researcher.

Mentors and tutorials

My University Lead Mentor (ULM) has been outstanding throughout the year, providing timely, constructive, and intellectually stimulating feedback that has shaped the way I think about teaching and learning. The weekly cohort sessions and subject-specific tutorials have been equally enriching, fostering collaboration and encouraging continuous professional reflection. What stands out most is how each session consistently ties theory to practice and ensuring that every strategy discussed can be effectively implemented in the classroom.

Applying theoretical learning in the classroom

A particularly valuable part of the programme has been the Intensive Training And Practice (ITAP), which has allowed me to apply the theoretical understanding gained through the course directly into classroom practice. Through ITAP, I have developed stronger classroom management strategies, enhanced my use of formative assessment, and refined my ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of my pupils. The structured feedback process within ITAP has been incredibly beneficial for professional growth and reflective practice.Abdul stands with his class at desks beside him on a stage

Employment support

Another aspect I deeply appreciate is how the Coventry University and NITE continue to support newly qualified teachers with employment opportunities, whether through announcements about job and recruitment fairs or through access to recruitment platforms such as Handshake. These initiatives show Coventry University's commitment to ensuring that NITE's graduates are not only well-prepared but also well-positioned for success in the global teaching community.

A transformative experience

This course has been truly transformative, not just in enhancing my pedagogical understanding but in helping me redefine my role as an educator and that is one that is reflective, evidence-based, and globally minded. Looking ahead, I am excited to take this experience forward as a qualified secondary mathematics teacher, with plans to continue contributing to international education and curriculum development.

Personal thanks

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the incredible support I’ve received throughout this journey, particularly from the student selection officer, Hannah. Her guidance and patience have been instrumental not only to my own progress but also to my partner, Fatma Riahi, whom I personally encouraged to enrol in the Primary iPGCE with iQTS course after witnessing the quality of support and mentorship offered by Coventry University and NITE.
