Trying to figure out if you should go to university can be tough, which is why here at Coventry University, we've decided to help!

If you've not yet applied and are thinking about doing so, we've created five simple questions to ask yourself – it could help you decide what's right for you.

Five key questions about university:

1

Is it important to go to university?

Think ahead to five years’ time, what is it that you want to be doing for a living? This might be difficult to answer this point in time, but think about the subjects you’re interested in – for a lot of careers, such as nursing or engineering, you may need a degree.

If you aren’t sure of what to do after university, look to study a subject that interests you because it will come with lots of transferable skills.

2

How do I know which university is right for me?

The simple answer is do some research! It can be helpful to browse league tables but also take a close look at course content to see exactly what is involved and what you will be getting out of the course.

Go to Open Days and explore the campus and town. Picture yourself at the uni, can you imagine studying there? Talk to graduates that took the course you’re thinking of taking, where did they end up in their career?

3

What are the financial benefits of going to university?

In 2016, working age graduates earned on average £9,500 more than non-graduates, while postgraduates earned on average £6,000 more than graduates (GOV.UK Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2016). If you're worried about the cost, look at university as a long term investment. It might also help to see what type of loan you could be entitled to.
