Modules

Overview

This one-year course will focus on developing professional and entrepreneurial skills within the hospitality, tourism and wellness industry. In the final stretch, you’ll undertake a research project, which will include a comprehensive study of a chosen subject, conducted in a logical and detailed way.

Modules

  • Professional Identity and Research Design

This module aims to guide students through the process of self-assessment of skills and competences, personal career planning and the application of different learning and development approaches within a work environment. Furthermore, this module is intended to provide students with the opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and competence to develop a research proposal in the field of educational research to a high academic standard; placing a particular emphasis on educational research design and the articulation of research questions with a valid and reliable research methodology.

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation for International, Hospitality and Wellness Tourism

The aims of this module are to develop a critical understanding of the nature of enterprise, entrepreneurship and innovation within the hospitality and wellness tourism industries together; with actual entrepreneurial competence/skills. The module will consider entrepreneurship in a range of hospitality and wellness tourism business contexts – large and small businesses, private and public sector businesses, regional, national and international businesses. Also, this module will examine the nature and implications of the considerable body of entrepreneurship theory and to encourage greater awareness of entrepreneurship and innovation amongst students and to develop entrepreneurial competencies.

  • Wellness Practise and Health Promotion

This module aims to introduce to the students the Wellness Practise knowledge and skills required to plan, deliver and evaluate highly personalised programmes that can have a significant impact on customer’s emotional and physical wellbeing in Hospitality and Tourism industry. The module aims to analyse the profiles and motivations of typical health tourists, making a distinction between different typologies of health tourism (e.g. traditional spas, hotel spas, medical spas, holistic and spiritual retreats, medical centres).

  • Sustainable Tourism

The notion of sustainable tourism has been integral to tourism, policy and management for some time now and the concept of sustainable development itself has a long-history. This module will give you the opportunity to examine historic and contemporary works into the evolution of sustainable tourism. This will require you to study tourist types, their impact on the environment, economy and society and the emergence of other forms of niche sustainable tourism.

  • Professional Experience (optional)

The optional work placement module gives students an opportunity to gain work experience at an organisation, generally related to the subject of their degree. By undertaking this module students should master transferable skills by complementing the theoretical knowledge they should have gained in the classroom with the experience in real business sector.

  • Research Project (optional)

In this module, students will conduct a comprehensive study for which they will have to analyse a chosen research topic in a logical and detailed way. Students will be responsible for framing a research problem guided by gaps in existing knowledge and by an organisational issue. The aim is for students to independently research a topic area by using appropriate research strategies, and they will get the chance to apply specific knowledge and research methods to a relevant model. Upon successfully completing this module, students should be confident to communicate the research outcomes in a manner that demonstrates clarity of organisational thinking, logical argument and the production of relevant recommendations for further research and for practice.

Unconditional offers

We want to recruit the best students to Coventry and having assessed applicants' past, current and predicted performance and commitment to the course we feel that it is appropriate to reward consistently high-achieving students with an unconditional offer from a top university. It is a commitment from us with regard to an applicants’ potential as an excellent undergraduate and we hope that this will encourage such applicants to join the Coventry community.

Personal statements and references will also be taken into account and, for some degree courses, an interview will form part of the assessment. The criteria for unconditional offers will vary across the University as entry requirements for specific courses differ and not all degree courses will be taking part in the Scheme. The unconditional offer will be confirmed once a selected applicant has made Coventry their firm choice.

Coventry University has assessed that you are capable of achieving excellent grades and we have demonstrated this belief by making you an unconditional offer. This is our commitment to you so then we ask that you reciprocate this commitment by selecting us as your ‘firm’ choice and activating your unconditional offer.

We will consider other qualifications for a pre-result unconditional offer providing that you have an appropriate proven performance at GCSE (or equivalent) level and predicted grades in line with grades that we expect to see at A-level. Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: the International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).

An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So if you don’t meet your predictions then your place at Coventry is still guaranteed. However we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.

We can’t but our experience over the years has shown us that students like you with a track record of high grades and excellent predictions are very likely to achieve those grades. Our assessment takes into account all elements of your application to allow us to take a holistic view of your potential. There is still the opportunity to gain one of the Coventry University Scholarships if you achieve the required grades so there is a financial incentive to aim high. Unconditional offers are only made to individuals who have demonstrated their commitment so we believe their focus and determination is unlikely to waver in the final stages of their qualifications.

No, the unconditional offer is only available to those who will take up their place in 2019.
