The first year introduces students to basic digital principles, which are reinforced in the second year with more business-orientated case studies and practical work. In the third and final year, students learn and refine complex advanced skills. As students are about to hit the graduate job market, we aim to equip them with the knowledge and capabilities that allow successful transition into industry.

By studying this course, you should gain a good understanding of the role of digital technologies in business and how it’s used to gain competitive advantage and streamline functions. You will also be introduced to the management of key data and the development of information systems, supported by hardware and software components. Entering at an introductory level, most of the modules in this year contain a practical element, so that you receive the best combination of theoretical and kinaesthetic learning. As the course progresses, this academic year builds on the knowledge gained in year one to cement a solid foundation of core principles. Now that you are working to a higher level after completing the Higher National Certificate, you will begin building your knowledge and understanding of server-side and client-side programming, security applications and software development to actively support businesses. It also covers computer hacking and the importance of data security in today’s world. Students who complete year two are eligible for a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Digital & Technology Solutions.

Sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the work place. You can also choose to take an optional year abroad between the second and third year of study. If you decide to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year, this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.
In the final year, you will analyse the use of digital technology as an enabler for organisations, with the complex and fast-changing trends in a business context. We cover key processes, the role of information systems in supporting business functions, enterprise planning systems and their functional capabilities. Finally, you’ll get the chance to demonstrate your skills in a number of independent projects, taking charge of processes from inception to delivery. Students who complete the final year are awarded a BSc (Hons) degree in Digital & Technology Solutions.

If you are fascinated with computer systems, software, the online arena and business, our Digital & Technology Solutions BSc degree with enable you to learn about appropriate processes, practices and legislation that will allow you to integrate into the world of IT.
We’ve spent £14 million on a brand new campus building. It’s a purpose-built, state of-the-art development that is one of the most modern facilities in the UK. It includes a library, IT suites, mock law court, engineering and science labs, cafe and lots of individual and group study spaces. Next to us is Scarborough’s new leisure village. The complex includes an Olympic legacy swimming pool, sports hall, fitness suite, all weather pitches and the new Scarborough Athletic football ground.
Each course unit has been developed and is taught by specialists in the field of digital and technology. With years of experience in the industry, our lecturers bring a wealth of expertise that is crucial to the success of our students within the industry.
Throughout your studies, you will find that the course is underpinned with practical experience. You will have the chance to create functioning websites, networks and databases with access to industry-standard software.
At CU Scarborough, we put a strong focus on getting our graduates ready to enter the job market. This can be done in a variety of ways—one key element is work placements. With this degree, you are given the opportunity to undertake short and long-term placements in between the second and third year.

- We deliver one module at a time during each block. This means you can dedicate your time to specialise in each subject without the distraction of numerous modules and multiple deadlines.
Your main study themes are:
- Network development and maintenance: developing and designing networks including security, logistics, maintenance, testing and integration. You will also be introduced to theories relating to network design and maintenance and examine how networks are built and maintained through practical experiences and theoretical research.
- Project management: throughout the programme, you will learn service management, developing entrepreneurship skills and the importance of autonomous working. You will be given many practical tasks which you must manage yourself, setting and achieving milestones to allow progression onto the next stage of the project. You will learn time management skills and the use of Gantt charts and other tools to appropriately allocate resources and time. This is crucial for industry application.
- Software design and development: identifying the most appropriate software to undertake tasks within a business, including developing, designing and manipulating software to meet a specific aim. You will explore concepts and theories related to programming which provide solutions to a wide variety of business problems with the emphasis being laid on the whole of the software development process.
With our Saturday University programme, this part-time course can be completed in as little as three years. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.
We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.
Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.
Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.
The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.
Assessment methods vary and include: practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, oral presentations, tutorial tasks and assessments which take place at the end of each six-week block.

On completion, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the theoretical, analytical and practical aspects of policies, strategies and processes – within a changing environment, to meet stakeholder interests.
- Critically appraise theories related to how digital technology integrates with an international marketing and sales strategy. Including, the risk factors that need to be considered in the development of a successful strategy.
- Be proficient in developing international-level strategy, incorporating and considering risk, such as country, currency, cultural and competitors.
- Develop appropriate research and analysis techniques, alongside the ability to undertake reliable market research activities.
- Operate, lead and collaborate in a team to solve problems of a practical (experimental) nature and to provide appropriate solutions.
- Apply appropriate presentation and evaluation tools to establish the significance of research data produced.
If you choose to study full-time you can expect up to 20 hours of learning activities per week, made up of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, online classes and independent learning.
Groups are kept at an average of 25-50 students per class. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

What if I don’t meet the entry requirements?
If you don’t meet the entry requirements for this course, we offer a number of programmes to help you secure a place. Successful completion of one of the below programmes guarantees you a place on a degree course with us, subject to meeting specified criteria.
This degree programme has an integral stage 0 attached to it, so if you do not meet the entry requirements you may enter at the foundation level. Successful completion of a relevant Foundation Year course will guarantee you progression onto this degree programme.
Access to HE Course
Access to HE courses aim to bring your academic skills and topical knowledge up to optimal standard for higher education study. If you undertake an Access to HE course and then successfully complete a degree programme, the remaining balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.
CU Scarborough has assessed that you can achieve the required grades and we have demonstrated this belief by making you an offer. This is our commitment to you so then we ask that you reciprocate this commitment by selecting us as your ‘firm’ choice and activating your offer.
We will consider other qualifications for a pre-result unconditional offer if you have an appropriate proven performance at GCSE (or equivalent) level and predicted grades in line with grades that we expect to see at A-level. Other qualifications that we may consider for a pre-result unconditional offer include: The International Baccalaureate Diploma, BTEC Level 3 qualifications, Cambridge Pre-U and combinations of qualifications (e.g. BTECS plus A-levels).

Each academic year we review our fee structure to ensure we're offering value for money to all our students. The 2020/21 fees are currently under review and will be available in autumn 2019.
Full-time and part-time students resident in the UK or EU can apply to the Student Loans Company for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU Scarborough.

For international students, we may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
