Overview

Whether you’ve been teaching in Higher Education (HE) for a number of years or are relatively new to the HE environment, this course does more than build on your knowledge, it offers you space to explore your teaching philosophy, discover insights into why you teach the way you do, and better understand what underpins your chosen approach.

We aim to offer you the chance to learn with a culturally diverse group of peers to exchange ideas of best practice and enrich your own perspective of education in our increasingly interconnected world. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to build greater self-awareness and confidence as an educator, helping you to make a deeper and more meaningful impact on your students’ own learning journeys.

Delivered online with dedicated one-to-one support, this course offers you the opportunity to learn flexibly and complete each module during the semester of study at a time and place that suits you, combining informative articles, engaging videos and in-depth discussions with fellow educators.

Overview

Modules

In more detail...

The PgC LaTHE explores the issues you are likely to encounter in your academic practice, including understanding student learning, designing and delivering learning, assessment and feedback, evaluation of practice; academic leadership; quality assurance; and curriculum development

You’ll be encouraged to develop your HE practices through critical evaluation of your experiences and the experiences of your fellow practitioners. This will be backed up by current pedagogical research, debates in HE and exploration into how effective practice can be applied.

The course is designed to be studied part-time.

During your study, we’ll provide a mix of engaging videos, live seminars and a variety of interactive content and activities. The online contact between associate lecturers, progression coaches and fellow learners, aims to help you stay motivated and committed to your learning.

Each module runs with 20 credits across an academic semester of 13 weeks, requiring an estimated 20 hours of study time per week, made up of directed and self-directed learning.

The underlying focus is on developing your ability to think critically and strategically and to enable you to develop solutions to complex problems within an ever-changing HE landscape.

The innovative and interactive content and activities provided on our online learning platform, FutureLearn, open up opportunities to participate in discussions with fellow students from around the world.

One of the aims of the course is to provide you with experiences of real-life issues. As such, you’ll be exposed to real-life case studies, simulations and expert insight to help bring contemporary and theoretical concepts to life and further your knowledge of developing strategies, handling change and managing growth.

There are three main ways that you may be assessed during your modules:

1. Formative assessment: this is NOT credit-bearing, but we strongly recommend completing formative assessment tasks to receive accurate and useful feedback that may help you develop and practise the skills needed for credit-bearing assessments. Formative assessment can include activities such as peer reviews, quizzes and self-assessment.

2. CORE assessment: CORE assessments are pass/fail only. They can include activities such as short tests, exams and reports. You are usually given two attempts at any CORE assessment. Check the module guide for more information.

3. Applied CORE assessment: this will ALWAYS be credit-bearing and therefore essential to passing your module. Applied CORE assessments are scored out of 100. They may include tasks such as essays, reports, video presentations, group work, reflective pieces, exams and scientific posters.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Design, plan and deliver holistic learner-centred learning experiences for diverse student groups within a global higher education context
  • Create engaging learning environments, employing appropriate digital tools and resources that support students’ learning and development
  • Design and implement effective assessment and feedback practices to support students’ learning
  • Critically analyse how your academic practice is informed by local and international practices and policies, as well as contemporary drivers in higher education
  • Critically examine how higher education quality assurance and enhancement processes influence your practice
  • Reflect on and evaluate your effectiveness as an academic practitioner by engaging in a community of practice and drawing on evidence from your practice, informed by disciplinary and pedagogic research in higher education

A 20-credit module is structured similarly and consists of 200 hours of learning over a 13 week study period.

During your study, you’ll have access to an experienced team, including associate lecturers, progression coaches and student experience officers, who will support your studies through regular feedback and dedicated live seminars.
