Sparking change in school culture

Allison is studying NITE's Senior Leader Apprenticeship plus MA in Educational Leadership. We chatted to her about how she was finding the course and what, if any, change it had sparked within herself and her school.

What have you enjoyed the most about this course so far?

The content has been the highlight for me. It's practical, up-to-date, and offers numerous opportunities to apply what we're learning directly in my leadership role. The emphasis on reflection, supported by real success stories, adds depth to the learning experience, making it both theoretical and practical.

What have you learned about yourself during the course?

One key insight for me is the importance of authenticity in leadership. Being true to oneself while honing necessary skills is essential. Additionally, I've come to challenge preconceived notions about what makes a good leader, realising that leadership comes in various forms beyond physical attributes.

Has anything surprised you about the course?

Initially, I expected a heavy emphasis on theory, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the practical aspect. The case studies, though fictional, draw from real experiences, making the learning more tangible. It's not just about absorbing theory; it's about internalising and applying concepts.

Has the course allowed you to identify situations where you need to change?

Absolutely. The unit on leadership and culture has been particularly impactful in this regard. It emphasises the role of leaders in shaping organisational culture, highlighting the importance of modelling desired behaviours and values.

What has the support from NITE been like?

Once I settled into the course, the support from NITE has been excellent. Clear communication channels ensure timely assistance, whether it's addressing difficulties or seeking guidance. This support has been invaluable in maintaining a balance between work and studies.

Do you think the structure of the course contributes to improving leadership skills?

The structure of the course is meticulously designed to foster leadership development. Starting with an understanding of different leadership styles and situational adaptability, it progresses to exploring the creation of organisational culture. Tripartite meetings provide a valuable opportunity for feedback and growth, both for individuals and their workplaces.

How supportive has your school been with your learning and studies?

My school has been incredibly supportive, especially in light of my focus on leadership and culture. The course has sparked discussions on enhancing the school culture and raising standards, demonstrating the practical impact of my studies on the school community.

Has the course impacted your own leadership achievements and ambitions?

Despite being only two modules in, the course has already influenced my leadership aspirations. It has provided clarity on the skills and knowledge needed for effective leadership, fuelling my ambition to pursue higher leadership roles within the school.

What would your advice be to anyone considering this course?

I'd encourage them to embrace the journey with an open mind. Acknowledging where you are in your leadership journey and being receptive to new ideas can lead to significant growth. It's about challenging yourself and being open to different perspectives on effective leadership.

I believe this course is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills. The supportive environment, both online and during residential sessions, fosters a sense of community and encourages growth. I'm grateful for the experience and the invaluable insights it has provided.
