Introducing Fleur van Pol
Fleur van Pol is studying for a Senior Leader Apprenticeship plus MA in Educational Leadership with NITE. Here she talks about the support she's received on the course, what she's found most challenging and what aspects she has enjoyed the most.
What have you enjoyed most about the course so far?
I've really appreciated working with my associate lecturer, George McWilliams. He's incredibly humble and values every conversation, whether it's about my career, life in general, or how I'm progressing with assignments. There's no judgment with George, just positivity. Also, I've enjoyed delving into the academic side of things, as it enhances my understanding of the 'why' behind leadership principles. Additionally, the network of people I've met during this residential has been invaluable; I've picked up some great insights, like the concept of collective efficacy, which I'm eager to apply.
What have you learned about yourself during this?
I've learned a lot, actually. The course has helped me understand what I'm willing to tolerate and what I'm not, when it comes to leadership. It's given me a comprehensive view of what I aspire to be as a leader and who I'd like to learn from, before eventually reaching headship. It's been quite eye-opening in that regard.
Has anything surprised you so far about the course?
Yes, the paperwork around the on-the-job training was a bit surprising, but not necessarily in a negative way. The progress review at the end of each term was particularly positive, although it did initially make me feel a bit uncomfortable. On the whole though, the support from the progress review has been fantastic, offering constructive feedback and recognition of progress, which is very motivating.
Have you faced any challenges while on the course?
The most challenging aspect for me was probably the literature reviews we had to do for our first assignment. It had been a while since I'd engaged in such academic writing, so understanding the process was tough at first. However, George quickly recognised this and offered guidance on how to improve, which was incredibly helpful.
What has the support been like for you throughout the course?
I've felt immensely supported. George has been outstanding; he's always available and approachable whenever I've needed guidance or clarification. Also, Alex Hawthorn, the course lead, has been very understanding of our busy lives, which is reassuring. Knowing that there's a safety net and that our challenges are understood is invaluable.
My in-school mentor, who's the Headmaster, has been supportive, although we've had to be proactive in scheduling meetings due to the busy nature of school life. I've also sought guidance from other colleagues like the Deputy Head of Academics, to ensure I'm getting a well-rounded support system.
What has the impact of the course been on your own leadership, achievements and ambitions?
The course has reignited my ambition to advance into senior leadership roles. It has given me the confidence to pursue opportunities for growth and has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in these roles. Additionally, it has provided me with a clear understanding of my own leadership style and has enabled me to lead my team more effectively.
The whole structure of the course, including the modules and progress reviews, has been instrumental in enhancing leadership skills. The constant reflection and feedback from mentors and instructors have helped me refine my leadership style and vision, which has translated into tangible improvements in my department.
In terms of the apprenticeship levy, do you think schools are aware enough of its potential uses, and would you still have done this course without it?
I don't think schools are fully aware of the potential uses of the apprenticeship levy, but there is definitely room for improvement in raising awareness. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to afford this course without the apprenticeship levy, so I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity it has provided me. It's opened doors that would have otherwise been closed, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me.
What's your advice to anyone who's thinking of doing this course?
If you're serious about becoming a better leader and want to learn the pedagogy around leadership in your own time, this course is perfect for you. It's given me the opportunity to rediscover myself professionally and has provided an external support system that believes in me, which is incredibly empowering.
I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in this course and for the support I've received from my instructors, mentors and colleagues. It has been a transformative experience, both personally and professionally. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills and make a positive impact in their school community.
