A CU Scarborough student who became the campus's first industrial placement student says the experience transformed his future.

Harvey Williams, 22, from Bridlington, chose to study Business at CU Scarborough because he was able to stay close to home while studying.

That decision, combined with a year-long paid internship at global mobility company Enterprise Mobility's Scarborough branch, helped him achieve a first-class degree, discover his career path and secure a job in the automotive industry.

The placement completely changed my life. I feel like a completely different person to the one who started university. The placement pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me build confidence and strengthened my communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.

During his second year of study, Enterprise Mobility’s graduate recruitment team visited the campus to meet students.

After impressing the team during business challenges and presentations, Harvey was encouraged to apply for the company's Management Placement Programme.

He secured the placement and hasn't looked back.

Before Enterprise Mobility, I didn't really know what I wanted to do after university. The placement helped me discover a passion for sales and gave me the confidence to pursue it.

It also took me places I never expected, helping me travel across the country and learn from experienced business professionals.

The placement made my final year much easier because I could draw on real experiences in my assignments and dissertation.

It helped bring the theories we learned at university to life because I'd seen them being used in a real business.

After completing the placement, Harvey continued working with Enterprise Mobility alongside his studies before graduating in September with a first-class honours degree.

He is now working as a Sales Executive at Des Winks car dealership in Scarborough.

The year's industry experience helped me stand out to employers. I've always had an interest in cars, so securing a role with Des Winks feels like the perfect next step. Enterprise Mobility gave me the experience and confidence to make that move.

I honestly can't believe I'm the first [student on industrial placement]. I'd encourage anyone thinking about an industrial placement to go for it.

The tutors at CU Scarborough were really supportive and the smaller class sizes meant you got plenty of one-to-one support. Taking the placement was one of the best decisions I've made.

Harvey Williams

We are incredibly proud of Harvey and everything he has achieved. His success reflects the hard work and determination he has shown throughout his time at CU Scarborough.

Industrial placements give students the opportunity to apply their learning in a real-world environment, build confidence and develop the skills employers are looking for. Harvey embraced that opportunity and made the most of every experience available to him.

His journey from student to graduate employment demonstrates the value of industry experience, and we hope he is the first of many CU Scarborough students to benefit from placements that help them build successful careers and strong connections with employers.
