CU Scarborough is to help teach youngsters about the unseen links between science and technology and the world of sport.

A new initiative, named STEM2Sport, funded by a Partnership Seed Grant from the Royal Society, will show primary, secondary and sixth-form students how being active can help teach them about subjects such as physics and engineering without them realising it.

STEM2Sport will see CU Scarborough staff go into schools to lead pupils in hands-on experiments using professional-grade movement trackers and GPS technology to measure physical activity and apply energy concepts to sports performance. The initiative also includes sessions aimed at teachers to equip them with the tools to incorporate STEM2Sport concepts into their lessons.

By connecting STEM with the world of sport we’re making science more tangible and relevant to students. We want to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and sports professionals while strengthening relationships between schools and higher education.

Shane Thurlow, Associate Head of School for Sport at CU Scarborough

The initiative will culminate in a digital conference where students will present their projects and celebrate their achievements.

Once they have completed their STEM2Sport projects, schools will be encouraged to apply for up to £3,000 in additional funding through the Royal Society Partnership Grant Scheme, which will help them to continue their project through buying additional equipment.

We are really looking forward to delivering a programme funded by the Royal Society which will have far-reaching impact for schools and young people in Scarborough and the surrounding area.

Matt Butterworth, CU Scarborough’s Academic Director

CU Scarborough, which is part of Coventry University Group, gives students set times on campus so they can pursue their studies without compromising their other commitments. There are no end-of-year exams and students study one subject module at a time while enjoying personalised support and guidance.

Schools and colleges interested in joining STEM2Sport can sign up here or email Stem2Sport@coventry.ac.uk for more information.
