Business and creativity are a huge part of studying fashion at Coventry University London. That’s why Laura Onome Momodu, an International Fashion Management MBA student from Nigeria, had the idea to turn a classroom idea into a fully-fledged fashion event: the Renaissance Fashion X Art Showcase.
As the Creative Director and Founder of the project, Laura brought together over 50 designers, artists, and creatives to produce the sold-out event. It promoted diversity, sustainability, and collaboration – all whilst applying the business and marketing knowledge she gained from her studies.
The inspiration for Laura
It all started for Laura with a huge passion for fashion and culture. When browsing postgraduate courses, the International Fashion Management MBA offered everything she was looking for: a course which combined creativity with business strategy, getting her those skills she needed to thrive in the industry.
“Fashion and beauty have always been about identity, culture, and storytelling, but I wanted to understand the strategy behind creativity – how to transform vision into influence. Coventry gave me that foundation.”
Learning beyond the classroom
Taking place at Devonshire Square in London, the Renaissance Fashion X Art Showcase quickly became one of the highlights for Laura’s MBA journey. The event wasn’t just any fashion show, it was all about inclusivity and a place for artistic collaboration – even raising funds for the British Fashion Council Foundation.
"Renaissance was my love letter to Africa. It’s about a new generation of creatives who are not waiting for doors to open but building their own.”
Supported by several lecturers, Laura applied the leadership, marketing, and financial planning lessons from her course to create a professional event from start to finish, managing partnerships with sponsors and venues.
The advantage of studying in London
Studying at Coventry University London put Laura at the heart of one of the world’s biggest fashion capitals. Through the university’s strong industry connections, she was able to grow her network and get relevant experience through the PUIG Mentorship and Retail Discovery Programmes. She now works part-time as a Client Advisor at Penhaligon’s, one of London’s biggest luxury fragrance brands. She’s also developing LOME Fashion, her London-based brand inspired by Nigerian heritage, whilst planning future collaborations during New York Fashion Week.
“I see Renaissance evolving into a space where artists and designers are mentored, funded, and given global exposure. My goal is to make it synonymous with rebirth and the global fashion scene.”
Turning dreams into reality
Laura’s journey shows what’s possible when you let your creative dreams and academic excellence work together. Coventry University London empowered her to take her passion and turn it into a real-life, professional project. She took her skills in leadership, marketing, and entrepreneurship and showed them off in one of the most dynamic cities in the world.
“As a Nigerian creative and international student, Coventry gave me more than an education – it gave me the confidence to turn my ideas into a reality. Renaissance proved that students here could create something powerful, meaningful, and global.”
