Coventry University London students were treated to a guest lecture from Erik Johansson, Growth Analyst for TransferWise, on 8th February 2017.  Erik offered valuable insight into innovation in Business and Finance.

TransferWise is a startup company that allows the ease of transferring money abroad by offering cheaper exchange rates in comparison to other banks. The company supports more than 600 currency “routes” across the world.  Established in 2011, the company currently has nine offices globally and its headquarters is based in Shoreditch London, a few minutes’ walk from Coventry University London.

The event was arranged by BA (Hons) International Finance and Accounting student David van Stolk who is currently in his final year of studies. David took ownership of the event by personally approaching TransferWise directly at its nearby London office.

David said:

“I decided to organise this event to introduce students to non-traditional and conventional businesses in London. I have been interested in both technology and finance since I was 14, and we are now reaching a particular stage where those two subjects are actually converging, resulting in Financial Technology (FinTech).

“I think FinTech will create new opportunities to graduates, and by hosting these events I hope students will be able to broaden their mind. Disruptive innovations (in finance and business) are definitely here to stay, will become more apparent, and reshape the way current markets operate.”

Students learnt about entrepreneurship, the start-up phases of a business and how the future of business and finance is being shaped, whilst Erik stressed the importance of educating the market. The talk was truly engaging with students being able to input their thoughts and ask a variety of questions throughout the session.
