New laboratory at Coventry University Wrocław showcases the wonderful world of bioscience

Coventry University Wrocław welcomed students from top secondary schools as it celebrated the opening of its new bioscience laboratory at PORT Lukasiewicz campus.

Secondary school students were the first to try the new labs as part of Wrocław Biotechnology Day and they enjoyed demonstration experiments, alongside discussions on career paths and how biotechnology can lead to future employment.

We wanted to showcase the new laboratory space intended for Applied Biosciences students and also to encourage young people to engage directly with science. That is why we invited students to take part in interactive workshops, during which they could see DNA extraction from strawberries, the anatomy of an animal heart and experiments involving chemical reactions with their own eyes.

This makes it possible to show that science and biotechnology are not abstract, but very concrete and present in everyday life.

The event’s main focus was showing how biological sciences are no longer viewed through theory or laboratory work in the traditional sense. The Biotechnology Day emphasised that modern bioscience covers a wide variety of methods and research and can lead to careers in new and exciting roles.

At Coventry University we place strong emphasis on practice-based education, which is why students also learn their subjects in laboratories like this one. This model makes it easier for them to move from university into professional work, because from the outset they learn to apply knowledge in practice. That is precisely why the development of this programme and this laboratory space is so important to us.
