This is a highly focused business management degree designed to develop resilient professionals, able to proactively apply specialist knowledge, skills and capabilities in a diverse, global aviation industry.
We focus on the management of the multifaceted industry and the complex inter-relationships that exist between various stakeholders, such as airlines, airport operators, regulators, representative bodies and industry suppliers in a dynamic and challenging environment.
The course draws upon many years of experience within the Engineering, Environment and Computing Faculty (EEC) at Coventry University, and the legacy of previous excellent graduates, from the existing course. The course has been developed with the expertise within EEC, to ensure its currency and relevance for the delivery of learning and industry changes.

This degree focuses on practical aviation industry operations, placing an emphasis on air transport management as a system of interrelated activities and relationships to ensure safety and security of passengers or goods, increasingly dependent on the critical analysis of complex data and information technology.
As such, we aim to provide a thorough understanding of the aviation industry – the rationales of airport operation management, airport planning and design, airline yield management, airline fleet planning, route management and scheduling, passenger and cargo operations, air transport safety, security and emergency planning, aircraft maintenance, airline strategy, finance and economics, sustainable development of air transport, as well as the real-life strategies for airlines and airport operators at corporate and business levels.
A significant amount of project work at each level is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in the aviation industry. We also offer extensive placement opportunities and graduate schemes within industry, which have in the past included British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific Airways, Eastern Airways, Easy Jet, CityJet, Airbus, London Heathrow Airport, Birmingham Airport Ltd, Coventry Airport/Patriot Aviation, Servisair, Skyguide, Star Alliance, Eurocopter, TAROM, TUI Travel, UBM Aviation Routes and many others (subject to application and availability).
Career opportunities can be diverse and plenty; our graduates of this course in the UK have gone on to work for airport operators, business jet operators, tour operators, aircraft manufacturers, air navigation service providers, airport maintenance providers, aircraft engine, ground handling companies and manufacturers and service providers.

Your main study themes are:
- Airport Operations and Air Transportation: The fundamentals of air transportation, including the functions of an airport and its main operations carried out to support the airport system. The physical and human requirements of an airport will be explored and the management issues identified.
- Airline Strategy, Finance and Economics: Covers the strategic, financial, and economic aspects which underpin airlines. We will look at their strategies and how they achieve objectives, as well as the demand for airlines together with their costs, revenues, pricing, key industry trends, problems, and developments.
- Aviation Safety, Security and Emergency Planning: Current approaches and applicable regulations to aviation safety and security, encompassing Safety Management Systems (SMS), human factors and the use of technology applicable to aircraft, airports, flights and airline operations. We also consider essential procedures for coping with air and ground emergencies, which will include an Emergency Response Planning workshop.
- Transport and Logistics Management: You will have the opportunity to learn the objectives of efficient transportation and supply chain management (SCM), including achieving high productivity, high quality and seamless transfer of information, products and services between each stage of the supply chain and ultimately to the satisfaction of the customer.
This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field. Alternatively, part-time study is also available. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.
We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.
Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.
Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.
This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include coursework, tests, essays, formal examinations, practical or project work, group work, presentations, posters and other placements.
The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.
On successful completion, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: the operation of organisations in the aviation industry, the role and practices of the various business functions within those organisations, such as airlines and airports, and their external environment; the processes, principles and practice fundamental to the operation of airports and airlines, as well as facilities that support air transport operations; the processes, principles, and practice fundamental to the operation of airline companies, including elements of engineering practice in the industry; established methods for the analysis and design of solutions for logistics problems and the management of warehouse and inventory logistics function in a variety of national and international contexts; a range of current and emerging engineering and business issues affecting the aviation industry.
- Undertake a problem analysis and exercise reasoned judgement in assessing business and technical requirements, as well as demonstrate techniques to enable the effective control of an aviation or a logistics system.
- Conduct effective problem solving, design and decision making using appropriate quantitative and qualitative skills in the identification, formulation and solution of business and technical problems of aviation and logistics industries.
- Synthesise requirements and opportunities in order to recommend appropriate aviation management policies.
- Conduct research into technical and management issues being familiar with a range of data, research sources, and appropriate methodologies.
- Apply numeracy and the quantitative skills involved in data analysis, interpretation, and modelling of problems and phenomena in the aviation and logistics industry.
- Select and use appropriate methods of information and communications technology for business and engineering applications.
- Demonstrate an awareness of professional responsibilities, including an understanding of the associated ethical and legal issues such as regulations relevant to flight, air travel, and associated ethical, legal and business concerns, deregulation, privatisation, air service agreements, and aviation law.
Aviation management is a global business and to increase your employability and develop you as ‘global graduates’, we encourage you to study abroad as part of your degree. We will endeavour to support you in finding a placement anywhere in the world and in seeking financing for that experience.
Placements are currently primarily available in Europe, America or Asia and previous students from the UK course have been placed in Sri Lanka with Colombo Airport and Riga with AirBaltic. We have links with several dozen universities around the world for those wishing to study abroad or participate in shorter student exchanges (subject to application and additional costs).
As part of the ‘Global Experience in Aviation Management’ Add+vantage module, a group of 20 second year students recently undertook a week-long overseas fieldtrip to Hong Kong visiting its many local industry players, including Cathay Pacific, DHL Hong Kong, Dragonair, and Avesco, Hong Kong’s security provider. On another occasion, they visited Montreal with hosted visits to Aéroports de Montreal, ACI (Airports Council International), Air Canada, Air Transat, Bombardier’s Challenger Facility, IATA, ICAO and Transport Canada together with a visit to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. There are plans for field trips to France and Vancouver/Seattle in coming years.

Tuition Fees
We pride ourselves on offering competitive tuition fees which we review on an annual basis. Course fees are calculated on the basis of what it costs to teach each course and we aim for total financial transparency.
Career prospects
The aviation industry is booming, with passengers forecast to more than double in the next 18 years. This course aims to prepare you for a wide range of career options within the aviation industry – from airline and airport management to air transport consultancy, roles with industry suppliers and manufacturers or in international logistics.
It is anticipated that employment opportunities will be strong with graduates potentially progressing to roles in airport and airline operations management, consultancy, finance and revenue management as well as various graduate schemes and further postgraduate study.

The University will review tuition fees each year and will be entitled to increase the fees in line with inflation based on the average annual index of consumer goods and services announced in the form of a communication by the President of Statistics Poland in the Official Journal of Poland “Monitor Polski”. If the tuition fees are increased the student may withdraw from their student contract before that increase takes effect without incurring any financial penalty.
