The Confucius Institute at Coventry University offers a range of Mandarin language courses designed to cater to the needs of our learners. Whether you are a complete beginner or want to improve your business Mandarin skills, we provide courses tailored to your requirements and proficiency level.
Our courses follow the globally recognised Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) curriculum. The HSK courses span from Level 1 to 6 and have been mapped to the Common European Framework (CEFR), giving you a clear understanding of the course requirements and outcomes as you advance through the programme. Once you've completed your HSK course you will have the opportunity to take the HSK test, a formal assessment that recognises your Chinese language proficiency. As an official HSK testing centre, the Confucius Institute enables you to conveniently take the test after concluding your studies with us. It serves as a valuable credential, verifying your Chinese language abilities and opening doors to various opportunities.

Mandarin for beginners (below A1)
Is this course for me?
Aimed at anyone who is looking to start learning Mandarin for the first time.
What will I cover in this course?
Introduces topics such as meeting/greeting others, talking about yourself and your family, ordering food and drinks, and holding a basic conversation on age, nationality etc.
Post-beginners Mandarin (A1/HSK 1)
Is this course for me?
This course is for you if you have basic command of Mandarin or have completed Mandarin for beginners.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can understand and use some simple Chinese characters and sentences to communicate. Prepares learners for further Chinese studies. Mapped to HSK 1.
Lower Intermediate Mandarin (HSK 2 – A2) Level 1
Is this course for me?
Aimed at anyone who has completed Post-beginners Mandarin and is looking to progress further.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can understand and use some simple Chinese characters and sentences to communicate. Mapped to HSK 2.
Lower Intermediate Mandarin (HSK 2 – A2) Level 2
Is this course for me?
This course is for you if you're comfortable using Mandarin and/or have completed Intermediate Mandarin Level 1 and are looking to progress further.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can understand and use some simple Chinese characters and sentences to communicate. Mapped to HSK 2.
Intermediate Mandarin (HSK 3 – B1) Level 1
Is this course for me?
This course is for you if you're comfortable using Mandarin and/or have completed Lower Intermediate Mandarin.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can use Chinese to serve the demands of their personal lives, studies and work, and can complete most of the communicative tasks they experience during their Chinese tour. Mapped to HSK 3.
Intermediate Mandarin (HSK 3 – B1) Level 2
Is this course for me?
For anyone who has completed Intermediate Mandarin Level 1.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can use Chinese to serve the demands of their personal lives, studies and work, and can complete most of the communicative tasks they experience during their Chinese tour. Mapped to HSK 3.
Upper Intermediate Mandarin (HSK 4 – B2) Level 1

Advanced Mandarin (HSK 5 – C1) Level 1
Is this course for me?
Aimed at anyone with a good mastery of Mandarin and/or has successfully completed an Upper Intermediate Mandarin course.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, watch Chinese films and are capable of writing and delivering a lengthy speech in Chinese. Mapped to HSK 5.
Advanced Mandarin (HSK 5 – C1) Level 2
Is this course for me?
Aimed at anyone with a good mastery of Mandarin and/or has successfully completed an Upper Intermediate Mandarin course.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed for learners who can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, watch Chinese films and are capable of writing and delivering a lengthy speech in Chinese. Mapped to HSK 5.
Native Speaker Mandarin (HSK 6 – C2)
Is this course for me?
Aimed at anyone with a strong mastery of Mandarin including reading and writing. Anyone who has completed HSK 5 would be welcome on this course.
What will I cover in this course?
Designed to build on your advanced language skills, moving towards native speaker level. Mapped to HSK 6.
Business Mandarin – Level 1
Is this course for me?
Designed for anyone who has completed Beginners Mandarin and would like to develop business language skills.
What will I cover in this course?
You will learn how to communicate effectively during business meetings, negotiations, manage human resource issues, and carry out research and marketing. Similar level to HSK 2.
Business Mandarin – Level 2
Is this course for me?
Designed for anyone who has completed Business Mandarin Level 1 and would like to develop their business language skills further.
What will I cover in this course?
You will learn how to communicate effectively during business meetings, negotiations, manage human resource issues, and carry out research and marketing. Similar level to HSK 2.

Designed for anyone who has completed Business Mandarin Level 2 and would like to develop their business language skills further.
