Responsible Futures

The Responsible Futures kitemark, launched by the National Union of Students (NUS) in 2014, is aimed at embedding issues around sustainability within the curriculum. The scheme is partly a response to annual NUS/HEA surveys which consistently show more than 60% of UK students want issues around sustainability to be included within their courses - in recognition of the importance of this in future career paths.

Coventry University has been one of 8 pilot Universities trailing the new kitemark and was successful in achieving the kitemark in summer 2015.

Achieving the kitemark is the first step in an ongoing journey towards sustainability being fully embedded within the curriculum. The kitemark maps activity and provides and action plan to ensure on going progress. This progress is reported to our Deputy Vice Chancellor of Planning and Resources. Coventry University has welcomed being part of the formation of this kitemark and help promote this through hosting workshops at staff conferences, sharing information through our internal portal pages and through PRME time networks. It recognises commitment made by the University as well as progress made in ensuring students are fully supported in gaining insights into the importance of responsible practices and values within the future marketplace.

One example of this in practice is the University’s Humanitarian Engineering course that was presented with a Green Gown Award for its contribution towards sustainable development.

Responsible Future’s is embedded within our Education Strategy falling under the category ‘Community contribution and responsibility’, which is one of the five main pillars:

Communities benefit as we foster a sense of global citizenship and future-thinking, including: sustainability issues; environmental stewardship; disability awareness; social justice; corporate social responsibility; ethics and well-being.

Alongside the formal curriculum, the kitemark also considers informal curriculum such as the extensive volunteering opportunities led by CUSU which provide students with invaluable experience and contribute beneficially to the wider community.
