This detailed course focuses on giving you the foundation knowledge needed for a successful career within financial services.

A wide and varied industry, we will provide you with not only theoretical insights but the practical knowledge needed to effectively deliver financial services. Overview

Mapped to the Level 4 Diploma of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), this introductory year examines the regulations and practices that cover financial services and products. You’ll cover key topics, from the decision-making processes of individual investors and borrowers, to the most effective methods of communicating information. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Financial Services.

Modules

  • Financial Markets and Regulation

    The first module of the course focuses on providing you with a strong understanding of financial markets. You will look closely at the UK financial market and examine the powers and responsibilities of the regulators and the protection of UK retail customers. You’ll also actively discuss the global financial crisis of 2008 and the subsequent regulatory reforms.

  • Financial Protection

    Taking responsibility from the outset, you’ll be identifying the relevant areas of need for financial protection planning for individuals and businesses. In addition, you’ll also analyse the range of protection products available for both the public and private sector. There will be a written assessment in this module where you will demonstrate academic skills. 

  • Investment Theories and Risk

    This module focuses on reviewing and examining the principles of investment planning for UK retail clients. You’ll learn to estimate the inherent risks, behaviour and correlation of asset classes and investment products. To ensure a full understanding of the concept of investment products and their risks, you will also explore taxes and the law. 

  • Pension Management and Analysis

    Providing an explanation of the legal frameworks applicable to pension schemes and the concepts of pension management using the ISO22222 fact-finding process, in this module you’ll look at how to establish the clients’ goals and provide exceptional service levels and practice, such as regular monitoring reviews, thereby improving pension arrangements for UK clients.

Overview

As you progress into your second year of study, the level of complexity is increased as you delve into the business elements of financial services. Looking at the principles of business lending and financial risk, this year focuses on the micro environment, where you will analyse buying behaviour, international banking and planning investment returns. By the end of this year you’ll have refined your organisational skills in financial planning, ready for progression ptthe final year. Students who complete year two are awarded a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Financial Services.

Modules

  • Marketing and New Media

    An explanation of the micro and macro-environment of financial services with a clear focus on marketing regulation. This module teaches you modern marketing principles such as social media promotion and explores buying behaviour of UK clients, analysing the impact of technology on buying decisions, branding, price and promotion.

  • Financial Economics and Risk

    In this module, you will examine the financial environment and differentiate types of financial risks, equity capitals and corporate debts. You’ll consider the key issues involved in lending to corporate organisations and have a step by step induction into the process of calculating a clients’ risk, such as assessing creditworthiness. 

  • Corporate Governance and Risk

    There are several unique styles of leadership and you will learn and assess their impacts on trusts, culture and ethics. You’ll look at the role of regulatory requirements on significant influence functions, the importance of implementing a governance procedures policy and compare the UK principles-based regulatory approach with the US rules-based regulatory approach.

  • Financial Planning Practice

    This unit looks at the development and the demonstration of practical financial planning. With the ability to work autonomously, you’ll investigate investment returns, international banking and behavioural finances to support the provision of professional advice. At the end of this module, you should be competent in using the ISO22222 financial planning process to achieve a clients' goals.

Sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the workplace. Furthermore, if you choose to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year, this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.

Overview

By this final year, you can confidently draw on governance and regulations to give sound, financial advice. As you can now calculate risk appropriately, this year focuses on refining existing skills such as financial planning while expanding your learning to the wider financial environment, global and strategic. At this level, you’ll look at high-stake financial services, such as portfolio management, trust management and investment practice. Students who complete year three are awarded a BA (Hons) Degree in Financial Services.

  • Business Financial Planning

    You will explore the complex aspects of integrated financial planning and how the process is used to achieve the clients' goals. You’ll discuss key behavioural finance theories and evaluate the application of key concepts in business accounts and financial controls. Assessments include activities such as demonstrating your knowledge by formulating suitable financial plans for an organisation.

  • Taxation and Trust Management

    This module concerns itself with the application of key skills in calculating UK income taxes, national insurance contributions, capital gains taxes, corporation taxes and value added taxes. You’ll examine the principles of trusts and the main types of trusts used in financial services planning, including evaluation of suitable estates and how settlors, trustees and beneficiaries are taxed.

  • Investment Practice

    A popular module, this is an exploration of investment performance. Working autonomously, you’ll critically analyse the utilisation of financial and non-financial analysis to establish performance. You’ll also explore portfolio management, including portfolio construction, asset allocation and fund selection, evaluating high-risk investments and how they’re used efficiently in the financial planning process.

  • Portfolio Management & Analysis

    A key area of financial services is portfolio management. It can involve enabling clients to collate and view all their financial assets on a singular platform and advising clients on strategic financial steps, dependent on risk factors. You’ll examine techniques to assess investors’ behaviour, behavioural finance theories, the benefits of active management and passive management styles.

Your main study themes are:

  • Financial Regulation: The structure and regulation of financial products, services and strategies available to individuals and businesses.
  • Marketing Strategies: The most effective methods of communicating information about banking and insurance products, services and strategies and managing client relationships.
  • Financial Planning: The decision-making processes of individual investors and borrowers, taxation of individuals and organisation, business financial planning and investment practice.
  • Wealth Management: Products and services, the application of these to a client base and the regulation that governs these.
  • Portfolio Management and Analysis: Alternative approaches to investment management, asset valuation and risk management, plus business financial planning and investment planning.

This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.

We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.

Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.

Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.

Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, presentations, tutorial tasks and assessments which take place at the end of each six-week block.

On completion, you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the theoretical, analytical and practical aspects of policies, strategies and processes within a changing environment, to meet stakeholder interests.
  • Critically appraise theories related to the development of financial planning, including the risk factors that need to be considered in the development of a successful strategy.
  • Develop appropriate research and analysis techniques, alongside the ability to undertake reliable market research activities.
  • Operate, lead and collaborate in a team and independently to solve problems of a financial nature and to provide appropriate solutions.
  • Apply appropriate presentation and evaluation tools to establish the significance of research data produced.

Full-time students receive 18 hours of teaching each week.
Classes are split into two categories:
Morning - 9am-1pm
Afternoon - 2pm-6pm

We hold tutorials in groups no larger than 5 every week. These sessions are mandatory and ensure you receive detailed feedback about your work, go into depth on specific topics and have any of your burning questions answered.

Groups are kept at an average of 25-50 students per class. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

Full-time (UK/EU)

For the academic year 2017/18, each six-week block will cost £1,502.25. A full academic year is made up of four of these blocks, so this means that a normal full-time year is £6,009. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU Coventry Library & Learning Services, all your classes and online tutorials.
