The Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) at Coventry University is now one of the largest and most successful research centres focusing on responsible business, with over forty specialist researchers, 16 Professors and Associate Professors (Readers), more than 100 doctoral researchers, a DBA programme and a specialist research support team.
Data and the digital economy; economic development and green growth; entrepreneurship and innovation; sustainability and the circular economy; ethical consumption; responsible personal finance and financial education; the impact of mega events and disability sports. CBiS explores the impact of business on society and the ramifications for policy makers.

Doctoral students help to develop a thriving research atmosphere at CBiS through various activities. They have their own student-led reading group and are encouraged to actively contribute to the CBiS research seminar series with invited academics and international expert guest speakers. Each of CBIS’s research clusters also runs events, such as workshops and conferences, which PhDs help to co-create and manage.
There are University-wide initiatives to promote Doctoral research, such as poster competitions and the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. These activities provide great experience and help to develop transferrable skills for a career within or outside of academia. The University’s Doctoral College provides research training, mentoring, counselling and career guidance to all Doctoral students in a thriving PhD community.
CBiS has designed its PhD programme so that it builds a dynamic community both within the clusters and beyond the Centre, setting it up to support its Doctoral students to have a rewarding experience whilst studying for their PhD.
The Centre’s dedicated research Professors and Readers support these clusters, as well as mentoring researchers forging their own research agendas. This mentoring reaches beyond CBiS, as we work alongside the research leads in each of the Faculty’s four discipline-based Schools to provide support to colleagues undertaking research alongside their teaching. In this way, the strong research momentum building across our Schools is both supported and linked into our Centre’s core research themes.
The DBA programme is cohort-based, with groups of up to 10 candidates mentored throughout their research degree by an expert academic team.
The DBA is designed for practising managers with the experience and roles to facilitate impactful change within their organisations as a result of their research.
Whilst the programme contains some taught elements designed to enhance your research skills and capabilities, the final award of the Doctorate is based on a portfolio of original research, presented in a thesis.
Postgraduate research is an integral part of CBiS and its broad portfolio of research. We welcome applications from high-quality candidates in possession of a Master’s with research interests in one of the four clusters at CBiS:
