Management Information Systems MSc


This course starts in September 2017 and January 2018.

In the era of Big Data and the obvious dependence of modern businesses on information and its criticality, there is a need to train up and equip managers for the management of Information Systems. The MSc in Management Information Systems prepares the graduate for engagement with the industry at a managerial role, by equipping them with soft and hard related professional skills. These are skills in relation to the comprehension of the impact of information systems on business processes and achievements from a global perspective.



A special feature of this course is that students are exposed to Systems, Applications and Products (SAP).  This is the world’s leading provider of enterprise business applications and solutions.  This software launches students in contemporary methodology applicable to areas such as IT services, cloud, databases, analytics or mobile technologies.


On this course, you will learn to appreciate the changing nature of information systems and the emerging technologies being used to harvest big data, including the new web-based applications based on in-memory, parallel computing paradigm and associated technologies, such as distributed file systems, SQL databases and cloud computing models.

We will explore the needs of modern businesses within today’s globalised world and how information systems can be developed to adapt. Using specialist software, you will put information systems theory into practice, simulating real-world business problems. For example, using SAP to support business processes by creating a sales order.

Your Master’s project brings together the technical and management strands; you will undertake a real-world project or participate in collaborative research with University staff. Recent projects have covered topics as diverse as the effectiveness of IT strategies and knowledge management in the reduction of carbon footprint within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMGG) industry.

Your main study themes are:

  • IT strategy: We explore the theoretical and practical aspects of IS/IT strategy in the context of a global business environment. A robust IS/IT strategy is constructed as part of the strategic business planning cycle; we will consider the drivers, critical success factors and barriers to project management. You’ll be introduced to the tools and techniques associated with constructing and implementing an IS/IT strategy and for evaluative decision-making.
  • Innovation and knowledge management: Innovation is a key enabler for the success and growth of companies, whether this is through technological innovation or business model innovation. Therefore, you will be encouraged to explore the broad context of innovation and its impact on businesses, but with focus on areas relevant to technology businesses. We will examine different models of change management and their relevancy and efficacy within organisations.
  • Enterprise Systems: Examines the organisational, strategic and implementation issues surrounding the introduction of an enterprise wide system into an organisation. You will learn how to develop a customised Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) based system based on specific organisational requirements.
  • Big Data Leverage: Big data normally grows beyond the capabilities of a Data Warehouse (DW), although some of the techniques of a DW can be applied to it. Analysing big data can reveal new insights for a business and its key decision makers that can have a significant impact on its performance. We provide an overview of big data, as well as the state and practice of big data analytics. Cutting-edge techniques will be taught which will enable business to sift through large quantities of data to discover patterns, relationships, associations, factors and clusters. We will focus on 'web-intelligence' applications which can exploit big data sources arising from social media, mobile devices and sensors, using new big-data platform.
  • Decision Support Systems: Develops skills and knowledge about the core capabilities and components of modern decision support systems (DSS) and their application to management decisions. Extensions into intelligent DSS, group DSS and organisational DSS will also be explored.
  • Business Simulation: You will learn to model the logic of business processes using visual modelling languages, how to fit statistical distribution to probabilistic business inputs and develop stochastic simulation models. We incorporate specialist simulation software, such as ARENA, focusing on computer-based simulation, where the model is implemented as part of a computer program, which can then be executed to compute and record the data which describes the simulated system's behaviour.
  • Future Informatics: New and novel developments in computer science are having an increased significance and impact on service and manufacturing organisations. We will consider the emerging Information systems, informatics and computer science that are and being applied in modern technology solutions.

On completion, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: The characteristics of information system management and their relevance to organisational frameworks; a range of systematic approaches used in the design, development and management of information systems as well as an evaluation of the key ethical, political, legal and social issues that need to be considered when carrying out research in this area; different tools and techniques available for effective specification, design, management of complex Information Systems; current and emerging practices and the principles of consultancy and the theories and practices found in leadership.
  • Conduct a thorough and systematic analysis of practical problem in the Management of Information Systems, leading to the interpretation of information from different sources as a basis for strategic planning. 
  • Critically evaluate a range of possible options or solutions in addressing a typical Information System Management problem which includes a critical review of the literature appropriate to the problem.
  • Determine how to provide solutions to identified problems in various situations including global contexts.
  • Choose and apply relevant management skills to both individual and team work in real-life, to make effective and efficient decisions in managing Information Systems.
  • Effectively contribute to cases of information system implementation, using sound principles of analysis and design.

Entry Requirements

An applicant for all programmes will normally be expected to possess at least one of the following:

  • minimum of a second class honours degree in relevant subjects
  • relevant professional qualification of an equivalent level
  • lower qualification plus appropriate and relevant experience at a professional level
  • satisfactory independent evidence of working for several years in a position commensurate with that of an honours degree graduate in a relevant field.

Please note: we have a range of taught postgraduate awards to suit your needs, from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma to a full Master's Degree (MA, MBA, MSc, LLM). In most cases you can decide to exit at Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma level, without carrying onto the full Master's qualification.
