Study in the EU

Erasmus (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is the European Commission's exchange programme that provides opportunities for students and staff to gain accredited work experience and study abroad.

In December 2014, Coventry University was awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) for participation in the activities of Erasmus+.

Erasmus enables UK/EU students to spend between three months and 12 months in a university or enterprise in one of the 27 EU Member States. Countries taking part include Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland (the "EFTA-EEA countries", i.e. those countries which are members of the European Free Trade Association and also belong to the European Economic Area). They also include Turkey, Croatia and overseas countries and territories" defined by Council Decision 2001/822/EC (a further 20 destinations).

Erasmus benefits

Study your subject from a different perspective while gaining academic credits

By becoming an Erasmus student you may find yourself studying in the most prestigious universities in Europe. You will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of courses that reflect your interests, discover new teaching and study methods, improve research skills and gain a new perspective on your subject area. You may also have the opportunity to learn a new language or improve existing foreign language skills.

Competitive advantage in the European job market
Surveys show that studying abroad can enhance your career prospects. According to the article in global education magazine, Abroad View, 67% of HR executives believe that overseas studies distinguish a potential employee, and eight out of ten HR executives believe that study abroad was an important factor for overseas job placements within their companies. Employers are looking for candidates with the study abroad experience because these candidates demonstrate excellent flexibility, adaptability, great leadership skills and knowledge of foreign languages. The Erasmus experience helps students to broaden their career choices allowing them to look for highly-paid jobs not only in Great Britain but other European countries. Study overseas and secure a genuine graduate job after graduation.

No academic fees
Erasmus and study abroad students currently benefit from a fee waiver if they are abroad for a full academic year, which means no fees to pay to the HEI abroad, and no fees to pay to Coventry University. Eligible students receive an Erasmus grant to contribute to living costs arising from studying abroad. Erasmus grants are paid in addition to the standard grants or loans to which students are entitled.

Foreign language skills
The Erasmus programme provides opportunities for students to learn a new language or improve their foreign language skills to the level of fluency. Nine out of ten recruiters believe that the ability to speak a foreign language is crucial to success in Europe, Asia and Latin America (Korn/Ferry International Survey).

Although Coventry University encourages students to develop their foreign language skills and offers free language classes in ten languages to its students through its Linguae Mundi programme, you do not have to speak a foreign language to become an Erasmus student because many partner institutions of Coventry University offer courses taught in English. Becoming an Erasmus student and learning a new language will help you to develop your creativity, bring sense of belonging to a wider world and upgrade your communication skills.
