This course is focused on career-building, so there’s a strong blend of practical content alongside your academic theory. We will connect you with industry and employers, bring the world of work into the classroom, and provide opportunities which will enrich your CV.

Your tutors on this course have close relationships with professional bodies, including the Chartered Management Institute and the major trade associations within hospitality and tourism. This means we’re always up to date with what employers are looking for in graduates.

Overview

The first year of your course will lay the foundations for business in general, including global perspectives, but will also focus in on the specifics of the tourism and hospitality industries. You’ll learn how organisations are structured, how business economics work, and how hospitality and tourism operations function in particular. You’ll also explore the diverse skillsets needed to run a successful and profitable business.

This year, you’ll examine what management means in the context of tourism and hospitality. Both are busy, fast-paced sectors which demand skilful leaders who can think on their feet; make well-informed decisions; get the best from diverse teams; understand and serve their customers impeccably; and do all of this within tight budgets. You’ll explore the legal frameworks within which you’ll operate, and learn how to deliver a successful project.

Tourism and hospitality are fast-moving sectors demanding very hands-on expertise, and they could take you anywhere in the world. So this course offers the option to add in a year for work experience (whether in the UK or overseas) or to study at a university in Europe or beyond. Either choice is likely to have a hugely positive impact on your personal and professional development, and will add to your CV in a way which will be highly attractive to employers.

Your final year focuses on more strategic and professional skillsets, including learning to consult to clients and the importance of sustainability. As with the rest of this course, you’ll root all of your learning in the global context. You’ll also undertake a major piece of work, with the freedom to choose between a work placement, business research, or a global business simulation. To help you approach that project, you’ll also deepen your personal research skills.

  • Operations – learn to organise a huge range of complex resources (from people to places) while delivering a profit.
  • Marketing – explore how to identify, service and communicate with a range of consumers at every level of the market.

30% of your time will be spent in the ‘classroom’; in other words, in lectures and seminar groups, being taught by our experienced tutors and learning by working with your peers. Class sizes are small, so you’ll get to know your tutors and fellow students well, and you’ll get plenty of individualised attention. The remainder of your time will be split between personal research/study and off-campus experiences.

Even in the classroom, the emphasis is on the practical and on real business exposure. The options for learning in this way include discussion and debate, giving presentations, writing reports, analysing case studies, and undertaking business simulations. You’ll also benefit from guest lectures delivered by leading industry experts.

Outside of the classroom, you’ll take advantage of all that London has to offer. You’ll be encouraged to make independent observations of hotels and attractions, and you could also expand your learning on short field trips within the UK and to European destinations. Your tutors will organise trips to visit leading employers and global industry events – such as World Travel Market London, which shapes the travel industry.

You’ll have opportunities to put your theory into practice by applying to take part in an internship. You could do an extended work placement (or a year studying at a university overseas) by adding in an extra year between Years Two and Three of your degree. You could also elect to do an internship as part of your final major project in Year Three.

Teaching methods may include: Lectures, seminars, textbooks, workshops, debates, case studies, consultancy projects, simulations, business plans and online collaborations.

Some of your assessments will involve assignments and exams, but the greater emphasis is on business skills. This will help you to develop confidence with the very practical skills you’ll need as a member of the workplace, including the ability to communicate, debate, analyse data, present and persuade.

Alongside exams and coursework, your tutors will set essays, reports, presentations, simulations, workshop activities and other tasks to ensure you’re on track with the required progress. Some assessments are individual, and some involve group work, and your work will be expected to be logical and compelling.

In a typical week you will have up to 12 contact hours of teaching, including one-hour lectures and 2-hour seminars. You should also expect to spend 24 hours each week on personal study: doing online activities, reading, studying, preparing for tutorials and revising.

As a part of this degree course, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a work placement (internship) in the UK or abroad, which could be for a term in your final year and/or a full year if you decide on a 4-year sandwich course. Alternatively, you could use the sandwich year to study at another university overseas. Your tutors will also arrange optional field trips overseas.

Throughout the course, all of your learning will be in a global context, and you’ll study alongside – and learn from – students from all over the world.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diploma

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements.

The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

An unconditional offer is what it says it is. So if you don’t meet your predictions then your place at Coventry is still guaranteed. However we would hope and expect that you continue to work hard to make the most of your potential and be best prepared to study at university level.

We can’t but our experience over the years has shown us that students like you with a track record of high grades and excellent predictions are very likely to achieve those grades. Our assessment takes into account all elements of your application to allow us to take a holistic view of your potential. There is still the opportunity to gain one of the Coventry University Scholarships if you achieve the required grades so there is a financial incentive to aim high. Worldwide tourism grew by 6% in early 2017. In 2016, tourism alone provided employment for 109 million people, contributing $2.3 trillion to the world economy. In 2017, the hospitality industry was the UK’s 4th biggest employer. Despite economic and political challenges across the world, people are travelling more than ever, for both business and leisure purposes – which means more opportunities in management and leadership, too.

You’ll graduate with a sound understanding of the hospitality and tourism industries, including how to run an operation successfully and profitably. You’ll also have a wide set of skills which will transfer across to any other sector, including principles of management and softer skills such as communication and teamwork. Where our graduates work

When you graduate, you could choose a career pathway in tourism or hospitality, or work for a large organisation which spans both.

You might join an independent hotel or a chain (either in the UK or overseas), on a graduate programme or in a permanent named role. You could work for a tour operator, a travel agency, an airline or a cruise company, or work in incentive or corporate travel. Roles will also be open to you in publishing, PR, journalism, IT or consultancy, for example, where they relate to hospitality and tourism.

Alternaitvely, you will have a wide range of skills which will appeal to employers in other industries, so you would be free to branch out beyond hospitality and tourism.
