Preparation Programme for the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council Registration Tests

OVERVIEW

This course has a September and a January intake.

This course introduces students to the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) domains of practice, which are both generic and field specific (Adult Nursing) embracing professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice and decision making along with leadership, management and team working.

This is a preparatory programme to guide students in advance of taking the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council registration tests.

Applicants and students must understand the requirement to leave the UK at the end of the course and that there is no guarantee of later obtaining a UK work visa from overseas.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course will help prepare overseas qualified nurses to undertake the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council tests for professional registration.

The key focus of this course is upon UK Adult Nursing which explores the evidence base of nursing relating to health assessment and clinical skills.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The module introduces students to UK Nursing Midwifery Council domains of practice which are both generic and field specific (Adult Nursing) embracing professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice and decision making along with leadership, management and team working.

There is considerable emphasis on holistic patient centred assessment and related clinical skills and their evidence basis. Revisiting clinical skills in line with UK evidence informed practice which will be addressed within clinical skills simulation centre.

This programme has two components, which are:

1) Competence and Skills for General Nursing

It consists of a single module which;

  • Exposes students to aspects of the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council test processes
  • Develops your awareness and confidence
  • Improves knowledge and explores evidence base for UK general nursing practice
  • Concentrates on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing
  • Promotes proficiency in practical clinical skills
  • Uses multiple choice tests [MCQ] and Objective Structured Clinical Examination [OSCE] as assessment methods

2) IELTS Preparation

In order to register for the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council tests, students must have an IELTS of 7.0 overall, with no component lower than 7.0. This English language preparatory programme;

  • Offers specific coaching from experienced IELTS teachers
  • Aims to improve existing IELTS scores to 7 via an intensive programme
  • Is set in the context of the University campus
  • May run at the same time as ‘Competence and Skills for General Nursing'

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

This course is taught with support via a specific online site, face to face classroom based teaching and significant time within the clinical skills/simulation centre. The course also uses a wide range of very engaging teaching methodologies.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed by a two hour examination combining multiple choice questions and short answer questions relating to patient care scenario situations.

The practice element will be assessed by an objective structured clinical examination within the university skills simulation centre.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

The course has on average 15 contact hours per week.

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants should hold the equivalent to a Bachelor degree in Nursing or Higher Education Diploma in Nursing.
  • Applicants must be a registered nurse in home country with a minimum of 12 months relevant work experience.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 6.0.

Note: Applicants must achieve an IELTS of 7.0 overall, with no component lower than 7.0, before submitting your application for the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council registration tests.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

If students obtain registration with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council they become eligible to apply for employment as a nurse within both public and private nursing settings as a qualified nurse.

However, it should be noted this course does not offer the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council registration tests but is designed to prepare students for these tests.
