Advanced Computing MSc

OVERVIEW

The MSc in Advanced Computing allows a computing graduate or a graduate of a closely related discipline to further advance their professional computing skills at a postgraduate level by study of a portfolio of bespoke specialist computing topics. As a leading University we are committed to the advancement of computing. Research in the Faculty includes Pervasive Computing, Distributed Computing and Applications; Innovative Applications for Interactive Worlds Serious Games and Virtual Worlds. 

Our research activities are strengthened by collaborations both within the University and externally with prestigious institutions such as the Serious Games Institute. These links provide a close interface between high-level applied academic research and leading edge technology companies in the fields associated with computing.

The course is accredited by the British Computer Society. The  programme is delivered by a specialist team of academics, and the research in the Faculty is recognised as world-leading (RAE 2008).

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The MSc in Advanced Computing programme curriculum consists of core topics and a substantial MSc project. Successful completion of both parts leads to an award of MSc in Advanced Computing. Completion of the taught modules without a project leads to an award of a Postgraduate Diploma. 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The mandatory study topics are as follows:

  • Software Development;
  • Software Engineering Design.

The remainder of the programme is bespoke, made up of topics from areas such as:

  • Database Systems;
  • Software Process Management;
  • Open Systems Application Development;
  • Real-Time Embedded Systems.

 

The MSc Project

The Advanced Computing postgraduate programme includes the completion of an individual project. Guided by an expert tutor, the MSc project serves to provide a method of applying previous learning whilst further developing the skills necessary to carry out research and facilitate the acquisition of valuable professional experience integral to that of a computer professional.

Entry Requirements

Honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a computing discipline, or an unclassified degree in computing plus relevant professional experience.

Please note: we have a range of taught postgraduate awards to suit your needs, from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma to a full Master's Degree (MA, MBA, MSc, LLM). In most cases you can decide to exit at Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma level, without carrying onto the full Master's qualification.
